COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (14-5 overall, 2-4 Big Ten) begins a three-match homestand this week with matches against Iowa (6-7, 1-3) and 16th-ranked Minnesota (14-4, 4-2). The Buckeyes host the Hawkeyes of Iowa at 7 p.m. EST Friday, Oct. 15 and face the 19th-ranked Golden Gophers of Minnesota at 6 p.m. EST Saturday Oct. 16. Friday’s match will be streamed on Buckeye Vision at www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com and Saturday’s match will be carried live on the Big Ten Network with Randy Rhinehart calling the play-by-play and former Ohio State All-American Audrey DiPronio Flaugh providing the color commentary. The Buckeyes will close out the homestand at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20 when they host ninth-ranked Penn State (13-4, 3-3). The match will be carried live on the Big Ten Network.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
Coached by Geoff Carlston, the Buckeyes (14-5 overall, 2-4 Big Ten) lost two Big Ten Conference road matches last weekend. The Buckeyes lost at Indiana, 3-1 (25-21, 12-25, 25-20, 25-20) and at Purdue, 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 26-24). For the season, Katie Dull is the team leader in points per set with a 4.24 average. Emily Danks ranks second at 3.03 with Anna Szerszen third at 2.89.Dullis averaging a team-high 3.55 kills per set. Kelli Barhorst ranks second at 2.46 with Szerszenthird at 2.34. Kelli Barhorst is hitting a team-high .399 with Allie Schwarzwalder second at .293 and Mariah Booth third at .277. At setter, Betsy Hone is averaging 9.69 assists per set with Amanda Peterson second at 7.48. In aces per set, Danks leads the team with a .73 per set average with 47. Sarah Mignin and Dull are tied for second at .27 with 18 each. Defensively, Mignin is averaging a team-high 3.12 digs per set. Dull ranks second at 2.02 with Hone third at 1.53. Mignin is the team leader in serve reception percentage at .965 handling 524 of 543 attempts. Susan Halverson ranks second at .950 (247 of 260) and Davionna DiSalvatore is third at .921 (244 of 265). At the net, Allie Schwarzwalder is averaging 1.37 blocks per set to lead the team with 12 solos and 62 assists. Mariah Booth ranks second at 1.15 with five solos and 50 assists with Dull third at .71 with nine solos and 38 assists.

DULL IS OSU LEADER IN POINTS AND KILLS
Katie Dull leads Ohio State in both points (4.24) and kills (3.55) per set this season and ranks second in digs at 2.02. Last week at Indiana, she tied her season high of 19 kills and added 11 digs and two ace serves. Dull posted six kills, five digs and an assist block at Purdue. She has had 15 matches with double-figure kills this season and seven double-figure dig matches. Dull is tied for second on the team in aces per set at .27 with 18. This season, she has played in all 19 matches with 16 starts.
DULL NOW NINTH IN OHIO STATE CAREER KILLS WITH 1,384
Senior Katie Dull, with 25 kills last weekend, now has 1,384 career kills and has moved to ninth on the Ohio State career kills list. She passed Suzie Stiling (1999-02) with 1,369 and need 26 kills to pass no. 8 Vanessa Wouters (1996-97) with 1,409. Currently Dull is sixth in career kills per set at 3.64, tied for 11th in career solo blocks with 55, 18th in career total blocks with 239 (55-184), 11th in career points with 1,612.0 and eighth in career points per game at 4.24.
SZERSZEN BECOMES 18TH BUCKEYE TO RECORD 1,000 CAREER KILLS
Anna Szerszen, with her first kill at Purdue Saturday, became the 18th Buckeye to reach 1,000 career kills. She finished the match with eight and now has 1,007 for her career. Szerszen added three digs, a solo block and one assist block against the Boilermakers. She posted eight kills, two digs, two ace serves and three total blocks (1-2) at Indiana. Szerszen has played in 19 matches with 10 starts this season. She is averaging 2.89 points, 2.34 kills, .23 aces, .98 digs and .54 blocks per set.
BARHORST HAS DOUBLE-FIGURE KILLS AT PURDUE
Kelli Barhorst posted her fifth double-figure kill match of the season with 11 at Purdue last weekend. She hit .450 in the match adding a dig and one assist block. At Indiana, Barhorst had seven kills while hitting .429. She added two digs and three total blocks (1-2) against the Hoosiers. A starter in the 14 matches she has played in, Barhorst is averaging 3.08 points, 2.46 kills, .11 aces, .46 digs and .80 blocks per set. She enters the week as the top hitter in Big Ten Conference matches at .424.
SCHWARZWALDER IS OSU’S TOP BLOCKER
Allie Schwarzwalder is the top blocker on the season for the Buckeyes with a 1.37 blocks per set average. She has 12 solos and 74 assist blocks. In matches last week at Indiana and Purdue, Schwarzwalder posted a solo and three assist blocks in each. She had eight kills and hit .312 at Indiana, adding three digs against the Hoosiers. At Purdue, she had seven kills and hit .400. Schwarzwalder has played in all 19 matches this season and has 13 starts. She is averaging 2.54 points, 1.63 kills, .11 aces, .50 digs and 1.37 blocks per set. In the Big Ten Conference only statistics, Schwarzwalder ranks ninth in blocks per set at 1.05.
PETERSON SETS A SEASON-HIGH 39 ASSISTS AT INDIANA
Amanda Peterson posted a season-high 39 assists at Indiana last week. Her previous best was 31 against Michigan State. Peterson added seven kills while hitting .875 against the Hoosiers adding eight digs, two assist blocks and one ace serve. She had 26 assists at Purdue while hitting .667 with six kills and added four digs and two assist blocks. Peterson has started the last three matches at setter and has five starts overall while playing in 12 matches. She is averaging 7.48 assists, 2.13 points, 1.43 kills, .22 aces, 1.13 digs and .83 blocks per set. Last weekend she hit .764 with 13 kills in 17 swings and is hitting .441 on the season. Peterson ranks ninth in Big Ten Conference only statistics with an 8.23 assists per set average.
PETERSON MOVES TO 13TH IN OHIO STATE CAREER ASSISTS
Amanda Peterson, with 65 assists last weekend, has moved to 13th on the Ohio State career assist list with 655. She was 15th entering the weekend and moved past Erin Hosie (1985-86) with 605 and Tracy Endecavageh (1989-92) with 618. She needs 59 assists to move past No. 12 Kelly Kessler (1983) with 713. Peterson ranks seventh in OSU career assists per set with an 8.40 average.
DANKS HAS ONE OR MORE ACES IN THE LAST 19 MATCHES
Emily Danks, with one ace serve against both Indiana and Purdue, now has recorded one or more ace serves in each of the 19 matches this season. She has 47 and is averaging .73 aces per set this year. Danks is currently 13th on the Ohio State season ace list. At Indiana, she recorded three kills, one assist, one ace serve, two digs and an assist block. Danks posted three kills, one ace serve, two digs and two solo blocks at Indiana. Danks has started in 18 of the 19 matches she has played and is averaging 3.03 points, 1.89 kills, .73 aces, .70 digs and .73 blocks per set. MIGNIN RECORDS HER 10TH DOUBLE-FIGURE DIG MATCH OF THE SEASON AT INDIANA
Libero Sarah Mignin had back-to-back double-figure dig matches last weekend at Indiana and Purdue to give her 10 on the season. She had 13 digs at Indiana adding four assists, one ace serve and handled 37 serve receptions without an error. Mignin posted 14 digs and a career-high six assists at Purdue and handled 34 of 35 serve receptions. A starter at libero in all 19 matches, she is averaging a team-high 3.12 digs per set and has 18 ace serves (.27 per set) on the season. She leads the team in serve reception percentage at .964 handling 524 of 543 attempts. Over the last four matches, Mignin has had only one serve reception error in 130 attempts.
BOOTH IS THE NO. 2 BLOCKER ON THE SQUAD
Mariah Booth has a 1.15 blocks per set average to rank second on the squad for the Buckeyes. She has five solos and 50 assist blocks. Booth posted a kill at Indiana in one set and played one set at Purdue. She has played in 18 matches with 11 starts this season. Booth is averaging 1.92 points, 1.27 kills, .02 aces, .02 digs and 1.15 blocks per set.
DISALVATORE AVERAGING 1.11 DIGS PER SET IN THE BACK ROW
Davionna DiSalvatore has played in 19 matches this season with 12 back row starts. She is averaging 1.11 digs per set and has a .921 serve reception percentage handling 244 of 265 attempts. Susan Halverson, with a .950 serve reception percentage ranks second on the team handling 247 of 260 attempts. She handled 21 of 22 reception attempts at Indiana and recorded five digs. Betsy Hone has started in 14 matches this season and played in 17. In the NCAA National Rankings released Oct. 10, Allie Schwarzwalder is 14th in blocks per set at 1.37. Mariah Booth is 85th at 1.12. Betsy Hone, with a 9.69 assists per set average, ranks 107th while Katie Dull is 80th in points per set with a 4.24 average and is 108th in kills per set with a 3.55 average. Emily Danks ranks second national in aces er et at .73. In hitting percentage, Kelli Barhorst is 17th at .399. The Buckeyes rank sixth nationally in blocking at 2.98 per set, 17th in hitting percentage at .277 and 87th in kills per set at 13.15. OSU ranks 13th in aces at 1.85 per set and is 115th in assists per set at 11.88.
MARIAH BOOTH NAMED BIG TEN DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Sept. 20, 2010
Mariah Booth was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for her play in the three matches of the Kennesaw State Owl Invitational. Returning to her hometown, the Kennesaw, Ga., native averaged a team-high 1.90 blocks per set for the three matches in helping the Buckeyes hold the three opponents to a combined .013 attack percentage and win the invitational.
Booth began the weekend with career highs of 11 assist blocks and nine kills in the 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-20) victory over Presbyterian. She hit .438 (9 kills, 2 errors) 16 attempts) in the match. In the 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-15, 25-10) win over Coastal Carolina, Booth recorded eight kills and five assist blocks while hitting .375 (8-2-16). She closed out the weekend with four kills, one dig and three total blocks (1-2) while hitting .429 (4-1-7) against Kennesaw State.
Booth was named to the Kennesaw State Owl Invitational All-Tournament Team after averaging 1.90 blocks, 2.10 kills and 3.10 points per set for the weekend.
ALLIE SCHWARZWALDER NAMED BIG TEN DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Sept. 13, 2010
Allie Schwarzwalder was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for her play in the four Buckeye victories at the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament. She was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 2.08 blocks per set in the tournament.
Schwarzwalder had eight kills, four assist blocks and one dig in the 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-18) win over Brown. She had five kills, four digs and four assist blocks in the 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-19) victory at UMBC. Schwarzwalder produced her first career double-double with 10 kills and 10 total blocks in the 3-1 (27-29, 25-22, 25-21, 25-18) win over Sacred Heart. She added thee digs and an ace serve in the match and her 10 total blocks and nine assist blocks were career highs. In the final match of the tournament, a 3-0 (25-13, 30-28, 25-14) win over Towson, Schwarzwalder had five kills, a career-high four ace serves, one dig and nine total blocks with a solo and eight assists.
For the weekend, Schwarzwalder averaged 3.65 points, 2.08 blocks, 2.15 kills, .38 aces and .69 digs per set.
BUCKEYES HAVE THREE BIG TEN NETWORK APPEARANCES
The Big Ten Network will have three Ohio State matches shown live this season. Buckeye home matches against Minnesota (Oct. 16, 6 p.m.) and Penn State (Oct 20, 7 p.m.) and OSU’s road match at Michigan (Nov. 6, 6 p.m.) are part of the conference broadcast schedule.
BIG TEN COACHES PICK OHIO STATE TO FINISH FOURTH
By a vote of the Big Ten coaches, Ohio State has been picked to finish fourth in the 2010 season. The Buckeyes finished tied for fourth last season. Six-time defending champion Penn State was picked to finish first, Illinois season and Minnesota third. Rounding out the top six is Michigan fifth and Michigan State sixth.
KATIE DULL IS NAMED TO THE 2010 PRESEASON ALL-BIG TEN TEAM
Senior outside hitter Katie Dull was a unanimous selection to the 2010 preseason All-Big Ten team by a vote of the Big Ten coaches. Joining Dull on the team is Johannah Bangert, Michelle Bartsch, Laura DeBruler and Hillary Haen of Illinois; Ashley Benson of Indiana; Alex Hunt and Lexi Zimmerman of Michigan; Kyndra Abron of Michigan State; Lauren Gibbemeyer, Tabitha Love and Hailey Cowles of Minnesota; Sabel Moffett of Northwestern and Blair Brown, Alyssa D’Errico and Arielle Wilson of Penn State.
HEAD COACH GEOFF CARLSTON
Geoff Carlston is in his third season at Ohio State. He directed the Buckeyes to a fourth place tie (12-8) in the Big Ten in 2009 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship finishing with a 25-10 overall record.
Carlston came to Ohio State after spending five years as head coach of Ohio University where he built an outstanding program. His squads played in five NCAA tournaments, reaching regional play in 2005. At Ohio, Carlston guided the Bobcats to five-consecutive Mid American Conference championships with an overall record of 144-22. He had a MAC conference record of 78-2 and was 14-1 in the conference tournament, winning four of five.
Carlston was named the MAC Coach of the Year four times and was twice named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year.
He began collegiate coaching with three years at Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) where he posted a 49-42 record. His career record is 244-99.
