Buckeyes Defeat Georgia Southern, 3-0, at the Hilton Classic – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (5-1) women’s volleyball team defeated Georgia Southern (3-3), 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-17) on the final day of the Hilton Classic in Ft. Collins, Colo. OSU’s Katie Dull posted a match-high 21.5 points for the Buckeyes with a match-high 12 kills (.400) and an assist block. Georgia Southern’s Bethany Sanford had a team-high nine points for the Eagles with nine kills.
Ohio State opened set one with a Dull kill. Bethany Sanford countered with a kill to tie the set at 1-1. OSU kills from Emily Danks and Kristen Dozier and an Eagle error opened a 4-1 Buckeye lead. A Sarah Gildersleeve kill and an OSU error cut the OSU lead to 4-3. At 6-5, a kill from Kelli Barhorst, an Eagle error and an Amanda Peterson ace serve opened a 9-5 Buckeye lead. Ohio State held the lead reaching set point at 24-16 with a Dull kill. A Sanford kill and a Kate Van Dyke ace serve stopped two set points to make the score, 24-18. An error by Georgia Southern ended the set at 25-18 for Ohio State, giving the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .382 in the set to .156 for the Eagles.
Tied at three in set two, kills from Danks and Dull and a Georgia Southern error gave Ohio State a 6-3 lead. Two OSU errors cut the lead to 6-5. OSU kills from Dozier and Dull and three eagle errors opened an 11-5 Buckeye lead. At 16-10, kills from Dull, Danks and Dozier, a Danks solo block and a Danks-Dozier block made it 21-10 OSU. An Eagle error set game point at 24-13. Dozier won the set with a kill, 25-13, to give Ohio State a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .556 for the set to .030 for the Eagles.
Set three saw kills from Dull and Sanford tie the set at 1-1. The Buckeyes took a 3-1 lead with a kill from Dozier and an Eagle error. Leading 10-8, kills from Dull and Dozier, a Georgia Southern error and an Anna Szerszen-Dozier block opened a 14-8 Ohio State lead. At 23-15, an Eagle error made it 24-16 with Ohio State serving match point. Moriah Bellissimo stopped the match point with a kill at 24-17. An Eagle error ended the set at 25-17 for the Buckeyes, giving Ohio State a 3-0 victory. The Buckeyes hit .324 for the set to .139 for Georgia Southern.
Ohio State hit .408 for the match to .109 for Georgia Southern. The Buckeyes had a 46-31 advantage in kills and a 3-1 margin in ace serves. OSU gave up seven service errors to six for the Eagles. Defensively, Ohio State had a 43-35 advantage in digs with Chelsea Noble recording a match-high 15. At the net, the Buckeyes produced five team blocks while Georgia Southern had none. OSU’s Danks posted a match-high three total blocks with a solo and two assists. At setter, OSU’s Peterson recorded a match-high 35 assists while Van Dyke had 21 for the Eagles.
The Buckeyes close out play at the Hilton Classic by facing Texas Arlington at 7 p.m. MT Saturday
