Buckeyes Travel to Colorado for the Hilton Classic in Ft. Collins – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (4-0 overall, 0-0 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team returns to the road for the second of three consecutive road trips, traveling to the Hilton Classic in Ft. Collins, Colo. The Buckeyes play host Colorado State (1-2) at 7 p.m. MT Friday, Sept. 5. OSU continues play Saturday at 10 a.m. MT against Georgia Southern (3-0) and completes play at 5 p.m. against Texas Arlington (1-2). Last week Ohio State won the Tribe Invitational in Williamsburg, Va., with 3-0 wins over Rider, North Carolina A&T, Maryland-Eastern Shore and a 3-1 victory over William & Mary.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
Geoff Carlston is the head coach of the Buckeyes. Ohio State has a 4-0 record after winning the Tribe Invitational. The Buckeyes defeated Rider, 3-0 (25-7, 25-9, 25-11), North Carolina A&T, 3-0 (25-5, 25-7, 25-19), Maryland-Eastern Shore, 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-18) and William & Mary, 3-1 (17-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21) to win the championship. Buckeye Katie Dull was named the most valuable player and Chelsea Noble and Kristen Dozier were named to the all-tournament team. Dull has a team-high 4.58 points and 3.08 kills per set average. Dozier ranks second in points (3.21) and kills (2.83). Dull is hitting a team-high .373 with Dozier second at .257. At setter, Amanda Peterson is averaging 8.11 assists per set with Betsy Hone at 9.00. Emily Danks has a team-high 12 ace serves with Peterson second with seven. Defensively, Chelsea Noble leads the squad with a 3.38 digs per set average. Dull ranks second at 3.25. At the net, Dozier has a .67 blocks per set average to lead the team. She has one solo and seven assists. Danks ranks second at .46 with six assists. Ohio State is hitting .316 and is averaging 16.31 points, 12.46 kills and 11.08 assists per set. The Buckeyes average 2.46 aces, 14.08 digs and 1.38 blocks per set. Opponents are hitting .048 and average 9.08 points, 7.15 kills and 6.38 assists per set. Tom Hilbert is the head coach for the Rams. Colorado State has a 1-2 record after last week’s action at the Asics/Coors Classic. The Rams lost 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-14) to Pepperdine, 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-19) to Oregon State and defeated Cal Poly 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-19). Colorado State’s Jacque Davisson was named to the all-tournament team. Danielle Minch leads the team in points (4.44) and kills (3.56) per set. Davisson ranks second at 3.50 and 3.22, respectively. Megan Plourde is the top hitter on the squad at .378. Minch ranks second at .270. Setter Evan Sanders is averaging 10.33 assists per set. Minch has a team-high three ace serves with Sanders recording one. Defensively, Katelin Batten has a team-high 3.22 digs per set with Sanders ranked second at 2.56. At the net, Tessa Nelson is averaging 1.33 blocks per set with a solo and 11 assist blocks. Minch ranks second at .89 with two solos and six assists. Colorado State is averaging 15.72 points, 12.89 kills and 11.56 assists per set. The Rams are hitting .245 and average .44 aces, 12.33 digs and 2.39 blocks per set. Colorado State leads the series with Ohio State, 3-1. The Buckeyes won the first meeting in 1983, in Ft. Collins, 3-2 (15-12, 3-15, 15-8, 13-15, 15-8). The Rams won, 3-0 (15-8, 15-4, 15-10) in a match played in 1986 at Northern Illinois and 3-2 (15-11, 4-15, 11-15, 15-9, 10-15) at the Texas A&M Tournament in 1988. The last meeting was in 2007 at the Coors Classic at Colorado State. The Rams won 3-0 (30-22, 30-25, 30-21).

Chad Callihan is the head coach for the Eagles. Georgia Southern is 3-0 on the season after winning the Holiday Inn Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.. The Eagles defeated Troy, 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 17-25, 25-18), Stetson, 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-14) and Presbyterian College, 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-22). Bethany Sanford was named the most valuable player of the invitational with Lauren Claybaugh and Kate Van Dyke named to the all-tournament team. Sanford is the team leader in points (4.10) and kills (3.70) per set. Claybaugh ranks second in points (3.00) and kills (2.60) per set. Both Sanford and Sarah Gildersleeve share team-high honors in hitting percentage at .364. Setter Van Dyke is averaging 10.60 assists per set. Moriah Bellissimo has a team-high five ace serves with Van Dyke ranking second with four. Defensively, Cristin Haines leads the team in digs per set at 3.10. Kayli Ketner ranks second at 2.60. At the net, Claybaugh is averaging a team-high .80 blocks per set with eight assists. Gildersleeve ranks second at .78 with a solo and six assists. Diane Seymour is the head coach for the Mavericks. Texas Arlington opened the season with a 1-2 record with a third place finish at the Illinois State Redbird Classic. The Mavericks defeated Gardner Webb, 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-13) and lost to Illinois State, 3-1 (25-17, 25-13, 21-25, 25-21) and 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-23) to Oral Roberts. Bianca Sauls was named to the all-tournament team for Texas Arlington. Sauls is the team leader in points (4.65) and kills (3.80) per set. Emily Shearin ranks second in points at 2.70 while Alicia Shaffer is second in kills at 2.00. Shearin is hitting a team-high .250 with Sauls ranking second at 2.43. At setter, Reagin Daniel is averaging 9.00 assists per set. In ace serves, Shearin is the team leader with four. Sauls ranks second with two. Defensively, Shaffer leads the team in digs per set with a 3.60 average. Daniel ranks second at 3.00. At the net, Christy Driscoll has a team-high .90 blocks per set average with nine assists. Texas Arlington has a 3-2 record against Ohio State. The Buckeyes lost 0-2 (9-15, 13-15) in 1977 at the Southwest Missouri State Tournament and 1-2 (11-15, 16-14, 3-15) in 1978 at the Houston Invitational. OSU defeated the Mavericks, 3-0 (15-4, 15-13, 16-14) in the 1979 AIAW tournament played at Southern Illinois. Texas Arlington won 3-1 (15-8, 9-15, 15-13, 15-11) in the 1981 AIAW tournament at Florida State. The squads last played in 1987 at the Brigham Young Invitational with Ohio State winning, 3-2 (15-13, 11-15, 15-9, 11-15, 15-8).
DULL EARNS MVP HONORS AT TRIBE INVITATIONAL
Katie Dull was named the most valuable player of the Tribe Invitational after leading the Buckeyes to 4-0 record and winning the championship. Dull had nine kills and seven digs against Rider while hitting .368. She had eight kills and four digs in two sets against North Carolina A&T while hitting .538. Dull, against Maryland-Eastern Shore, produced 13 kills and 10 digs while hitting .440. She produced her second double-double against William & Mary with 19 kills and a career-high 18 digs. In the four matches, Dull averaged 4.58 points, 4.08 kills, 3.25 digs and hit .373.
NOBLE NAMED ALL-TOURNAMENT AT TRIBE INVITATIONAL
Chelsea Noble earned all-tournament honors at the Tribe Invitational while averaging a team-high 3.38 digs per set. She had four digs against Rider and then had three consecutive double-figure dig matches. Noble collected 12 digs against North Carolina A&T, 10 against Maryland-Eastern Shore and a season-high 18 against William & Mary. In serve reception percentage, she handled 58 of 63 serves for a .921 percentage.
DOZIER EARNS ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS AT TRIBE INVITATIONAL
Averaging 2.83 kills per set, Kristen Dozier earned all-tournament honors at the Tribe Invitational. She had five kills and three total blocks (one solo, two assists) against Rider. She hit .769 against North Carolina A&T with 10 kills in 13 attempts and hit .667 against Maryland-Eastern Shore with eight kills in 12 attempts and added two assist blocks. She produced a season-high 11 kills against William & Mary, adding three assist blocks. Dozier, in the four matches, averaged 2.83 kills per set while hitting .357.
DANKS AND PETERSON BOTH START AS FRESHMEN
Ohio State opened the 2009 season with freshmen outside hitter Emily Danks and setter Amanda Peterson in the starting lineup. Danks started all four matches at the Tribe Invitational and averaged 1.69 kills and .92 aces per set while hitting .309. She had 12 ace serves in the four matches including a career-high four against Rider and Maryland-Eastern Shore. Peterson started the first three matches and averaged 8.11 assists, 1.56 kills and 1.33 digs per set. She had a career-high five ace serves against Rider and career-highs of six kills and 26 assists against North Carolina A&T.
OHIO STATE HAS THREE MATCHES ON THE BIG TEN NETWORK
Ohio State will have three Big Ten matches telecast live on the Big Ten Network this season. Both Penn State matches and OSU’s home match with Illinois will be broadcast. The Buckeyes host Penn State at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7 and return the trip to Penn State at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28. The Buckeyes will host Illinois at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14 in St. John Arena in a match that will be broadcast at 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15.
HEAD COACH GEOFF CARLSTON
Geoff Carlston is in his second season at Ohio State. He came to Ohio State after spending five years as head coach of Ohio University where he built an outstanding program. His squads played in five NCAA tournaments, reaching regional play in 2005. At Ohio, Carlston guided the Bobcats to five-consecutive Mid American Conference championships with an overall record of 144-22. He had a MAC conference record of 78-2 and was 14-1 in the conference tournament, winning four of five.
Carlston was named the MAC Coach of the Year four times and was twice named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year.
He began collegiate coaching with three years at Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) where he posted a 49-42 record. His career record is 209-84.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
OSU continues on the road when it travels to the UW Milwaukee Panther Invitational. The Buckeyes face Western Michigan at 11 a.m. CT Saturday, Sept. 12 and play host UW-Milwaukee at 7:30 p.m. CT. Ohio State completes the road trip with a match at Marquette at 1 p.m. CT Sunday.
