Ohio State Defeats UW-Milwaukee, 3-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (8-1) women’s volleyball team defeated UW-Milwaukee (2-8), 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-19) in the final match of the Panther Invitational Saturday night in the Klotsche Center. The Buckeyes finished play in the invitational with a 2-0 record while Marquette finished 3-0. Ohio State’s Katie Dull scored a match-high 12 points in the contest with 11 kills and two assist blocks. Jena Berg had a team-high 11 points for the Panthers with 10 kills and two assist blocks.
A Milwaukee error and two Kelli Barhorst kill opened set one to give Ohio State a 3-0 lead. At 6-3, a Mackenzie Millis kill, a Natalie Schmitting ace serve and a Buckeye error tied the set at six. With Ohio State trailing 17-16, a kill from Amanda Peterson tied the set for the ninth time at 17. Another Peterson kill gave Ohio State an 18-17 lead. An OSU error tied the set at 18. A kill from Anna Szerszen and a Panther error gave Ohio State a 20-18 lead. A Milwaukee block by Maddie Sueppel and Kerri Schuh made it 20-19. The set was tied at 20 with a Buckeye error. Ohio State scored the final five points of the set to win 25-20. The run began with a Szerszen kill and a Peterson ace serve as Milwaukee called timeout at 22-20. A Barhorst kill, a Barhorst-Szerszen block made it set point at 24-20. Peterson won the set with an ace serve at 25-20. Ohio State hit .323 for the set to .192 for the Panthers.
Tied at two in the second set, a Peterson-Dozier block, an Emily Danks ace serve and a Dull kill opened a 5-2 lead for Ohio State. At 6-4, kills from Dozier and Peterson gave the Buckeyes an 8-4 lead. Ohio State maintained the lead reaching set point at 24-17 with a Danks-Dozier block. The Buckeyes won the set, 25-17 with a Dozier-Dull block to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .333 for the set to -.034 for Milwaukee.
Ohio State scored the first four points of the third set with kills from Dull, Danks and Barhorst and a Susan Halverson ace serve. At 9-5, Buckeye kills from Szerszen and Danks made the lead six at 11-5. The Panthers responded with a five point run to cut the lead to one at 11-10. The run included two OSU errors, a Jansen kill a Sueppel-Jena Berg block and a Lauren Hintze ace serve. At 12-11, a kill from Danks and blocks from Dozer and Danks and Dull and Dozier opened a 15-11 Ohio State lead. OSU held the lead to reach match point at 24-18 with a kill from Danks. Berg, with a kill, stopped the match point at 24-19. A Panther error ended the set at 25-19 to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 match victory. Ohio State hit .343 in the set to .167 for Milwaukee.
For the match, Ohio State hit .333 to .106 for Milwaukee. The Buckeyes had a 50-25 advantage in kills and a five to three edge in ace serves. OSU’s Peterson recorded a match-high three. The Buckeyes gave up 10 service errors to three for Milwaukee. Defensively, Ohio State had a 38-29 margin in digs with Buckeye Chelsea Noble collecting a match-high 10. At the net, Ohio State had a 10-7 margin in team blocks. OSU’s Dozier posted a match-high seven total blocks with one solo and six assists. At setter, Peterson posted 42 assists for Ohio State with Samantha Trawitzke recording 14 for Milwaukee.
Name to the all-tournament team for Ohio State were Dozier and Dull. Additional members included Kikki Kligsporn and Leslie Bielski from Marquette, Michelle Moore and Allyson Doyle from Western Michigan and Sueppel for Milwaukee. Marquette’s Kligsporn was named the most valuable player of the invitational.
The Buckeyes return to action Sunday at 2 p.m. ET when they play at Marquette.
