Ohio State Defeats Western Michigan, 3-2, at Panther Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (7-1) women’s volleyball squad, behind a career-high 30 points from Katie Dull, defeated Western Michigan (3-6), 3-2 (25-18, 25-19, 23-25, 16-25, 15-11) in the second day of the Panther Invitational hosted by UW-Milwaukee in the Klotsche Center. Dull posted a career-high 30 points with 25 kills in the contest, adding three ace serve and four assist blocks. OSU’s Kristen Dozier added 18.5 points with 15 kills and seven assist blocks. Bronco Michelle Moore recorded a team-high 19 points with 18 kills and two assist blocks.
The Buckeyes opened set one with a kill from Dull, a Dozier-Dull block and a Dozier kill for a 3-0 lead. Western Michigan tied the set with kills from Allyson Doyle and Katie Eberling and an OSU error. A Doyle ace serve gave the Broncos a 4-3 lead. Tied at five, kills from Jessica Brown and Kate Corbett gave Western Michigan a 7-5 lead. With Ohio State trailing, 9-7, a kill from Anna Szerszen and a Bronco error tied the set at nine. The Buckeyes, with kills from Amanda Peterson and Kelli Barhorst and a WMU error opened a 12-9 lead. At 13-10, a Dull kill and a Dozier-Emily Danks block opened the Buckeye lead to five at 15-10. After a Brown kill made it 15-11, kills from Dull and Peterson, an ace serve from Danks and a Bronco error made it 19-11. Three Ohio State errors cut the lead to five at 19-14. At 22-17, a Danks kill made it 23-17. A Dull kill made it set point at 24-17. A Buckeye error stopped the set point at 24-18. Ohio State won the set, 25-18, with a Dull kill to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .357 for the set to .135 for Western Michigan.
A Western Michigan error and a Barhorst-Danks block opened set two, giving Ohio State a 2-0 lead. A Moore kill and a block from Mitchell and Corbett tied the game at two. An OSU error gave the Broncos a 3-2 lead. Dull tied the set at three with a kill. Two Western Michigan errors and a Barhorst kill gave OSU a 6-3 lead. Mitchell, with a kill, made it 6-4. A kill and ace serve by Danks made it 8-4. A Buckeye error made it 8-5. Two kills from Dozier and two ace serves by Dull gave Ohio State a 12-6 lead. The Buckeyes held the lead at 23-18 when a Bronco error made it set point at 24-18. Western Michigan, with a Doyle kill, stopped the set point at 24-19. Ohio State took a 2-0 lead in the match with a Barhorst kill to win the set, 25-19. The Buckeyes hit .138 for the set to .032 for Western Michigan.
In a close set three that saw eight ties and three lead changes, a Peterson kill tied the set at 23. Western Michigan, with a Doyle kill took a 24-23 lead and serving set point. A Doyle-Brown block ended the set at 25-23 for the Broncos to cut the Ohio State match lead to 2-1. The Buckeyes hit .368 for the set to .366 for the Broncos.
Set four, tied at six, saw Western Michigan open a 10-6 lead with kills from Brown and Moore, an Eberling ace serve and a Mitchell-Brown block. A Barhorst kill stopped the run at 10-7. Western Michigan responded with six consecutive points to open a 16-7 lead. A Doyle kill made it set point at 24-15. OSU stopped the set point with a Szerszen kill at 24-16. A Buckeye error ended the set at 25-16 to tie the match at 2-2. The Broncos hit .375 for the set to .258 for Ohio State.
Set five opened with a Bronco error and a Barhorst ace serve to give Ohio State a 2-0 lead. Brown, with a kill, made it 2-1. A Bronco error and a Dull-Dozier block made it 4-1. Western Michigan cut the lead to 4-3 with a Moore kill and a Buckeye error. Back-to-back kills from Dozier gave the Buckeyes a 6-3 lead. Doyle, with a kill, cut the lead to 6-4. Kills from Peterson and Doyle moved the score to 7-5. A Peterson-Szerszen block and two ace serves from Peterson opened a 10-5 Buckeye lead. The Broncos cut the lead to three at 10-7 with kills from Eberling and Brown. Kills from Szerszen and Brown moved the score to 11-8. A Moore kill cut the lead to two at 11-9. A Dull kill made it 12-9. A kill from Brown made it 12-10. Dull, with a kill, made it 13-10. A Moore kill made it 13-11. Ohio State reached match point at 14-11 with a Dull kill. Ohio State, with an ace serve from Dull, won the set, 15-11, to win the match, 3-2. The Broncos hit .389 for the set to .353 for Ohio State.
For the match, Ohio State hit .299 to .252 for Western Michigan. The Buckeyes had a 66-63 edge in kills and a nine to five advantage in ace serves. OSU’s Dull posted a match-high three ace serve in the match. The Buckeyes had 10 service errors to four for the Broncos. Defensively, Ohio State had a 63-59 advantage in digs. OSU’s Chelsea Noble recorded a match-high 18 digs in the contest. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 13-6 margin in team blocks. OSU’s Dozier collected a match-high seven blocks with seven assists. At setter, Jillian Mitchell had a match-high 54 assists in the match for the Broncos while OSU’s Peterson had 48.
Ohio State continues play in the Panther Invitational at 8:30 p.m. ET when they face host UW-Milwaukee.
