’08-09 Rewind: Women’s Track and Field – Ohio State Buckeyes

2009 saw significant improvement from the Ohio State women’s track and field team. With only two seniors actively competing, the Buckeyes displayed a tremendous amount of growth as a team from the start of the indoor season in January to the end of the outdoor campaign at the NCAA finals in June.
The Buckeyes were led by senior Ayrizanna Favours and sophomore Letecia Wright. The two were near the top of the Big Ten throughout the season in many sprint events — Favours finished fourth in the 400m dash and sixth in the 200m dash at the Big Ten Indoor Championships, with Wright placing third in the 60m hurdles, and seventh in the 60m dash. Ohio State finished ninth overall.
Records began to fall during the outdoor campaign. Freshman Maggie Mullen took the conference by storm in the javelin, breaking the Ohio State school record with her throw of 46.64m at the Drake Relays in November. She finished fourth at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships. Jordan Jennewine broke the school record in the 1500m run at the league championships (4:23.37), while leading the Buckeyes in the 1500m, 3000m and 5000m runs. The 4x400m relay team won the Big Ten title, as the Scarlet and Gray placed eighth.
Ohio State once again began to hit their stride late in the season, qualifying five individuals for the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. Letecia Wright finished 16th in the 100m finals, while Latoya Sanderson, Ashley Caldwell, Ayrizanna Favours and Shaniqua McGinnis claimed 11th in the 4x400m relay.
With nearly their entire team returning next season, the Buckeyes look to be a threat in the Big Ten for many years to come.
