COLUMBUS, Ohio Three recent Ohio State swimmers, including two of the three seniors on the 2008-09 team, received bachelor’s degrees during commencement exercises this weekend at Ohio Stadium. The group was a part of 107 Ohio State student-athletes who received their degrees in the storied and venerable “Horseshoe,” the home to the Ohio State football team.
The three swimmers included Griet Buelens, Whitney Hackman and Anne Rennebohm. Buelens and Hackman were members of coach Bill Dorenkott’s first Ohio State swimming team this past season while Rennebohm exhausted her eligibility following the 2007-08 campaign.
All three graduates were not only diligent in their academic efforts, but they were also exceptional as each of them was named an OSU Scholar-Athlete four times during her career as a Buckeye. A little more about each of them:
- Buelens was a three-time NCAA qualifier who won a Big Ten Conference championship in the 200 butterfly at the 2005 championship meet. She is from Kapelle-Op-Den-Bos, Belgium, and earned her degree in sports and leisure studies.
- Hackman, who was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference honoree, is from Goshen, Ind., and graduated with a degree in human nutrition. She competed in four Big Ten Conference championship meets during her career.
- Rennebohm, a captain of the 2007-08 Buckeye squad, was a member of school-record setting freestyle relay teams 200 and 800, respectively. She graduates with a degree in English.
The other senior member of the 2008-09 team, tri-captain Courtney Brayman from Pittsford, N.Y., will graduate next spring with a degree in engineering physics.
