Ohio State Second After Day 1 of Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State is in second place after the first day of the 2009 Ohio State Invitational with 203 points. Minnesota, the 2009 Big Ten Conference runner-up, leads the six-team field with 365 points.
“Overall I think this was a solid first day for the team,” Ohio State coach Bill Dorenkott said. “I was more pleased with our preliminary swims in the morning, but we did what we needed to do in terms of racing in the evening. I wouldn’t say that our times were fast, but we didn’t back down.”
After its 200 freestyle relay teams took third and seventh, respectively, to open the meet, Ohio State pulled into second place – and stayed there – after five swimmers scored in the 200 individual medley. Katelyn Brix led the way with a third-place time of 2:01.77, an NCAA “B” cut, and she was followed by fifth- and sixth-place efforts from Jill Lockhart and Angela Severn, respectively.
“Katelyn was better technically tonight and her 200 IM was a nice swim,” Dorenkott said. “Actually, all three of the swimmers, including Jill and Angela, had real nice IM swims.”
Megan Detro was the next-highest placing swimmer – after Brix’s third – when she finished fourth in the 50 freestyle in 23.32. Samantha Cheverton also swam in a championship final, taking sixth in the 500 freestyle in 4:47.11.
“Detro was just off the school record in the 50 free with her prelim time of 23.27,” Dorenkott said. “I was very pleased with her effort.
“And I also felt that Catherine Eitel’s breaststroke leg on our ‘A’ 400 medley relay team was a terrific swim.”
Also scoring points in individual events for the Buckeyes was Haley Mitchell, Anita Beck and Natalie Nichols (500 freestyle), and Lisa Narum and Shannon Draves (200 individual medley).
Divers Bianca Alvarez and Chelsea Davis finished third and fourth, respectively, on the three-meter springboard.
Notes and More from the Pool Deck
Watching, Coaching, Teaching, Learning Watching video. That’s what coach Bill Dorenkott was doing with a number of his swimmers prior to the start of and during the Friday finals. Watching, coaching, teaching and learning. And this is a meet day. There’s always time to learn. Here is Dorenkott coaching one of the swimmers:
“1.41. 1.42. 1.43. 1.50. Tempo up to all your walls. 1.59. You’re not using your legs at all. It’s tough to have tempo without a kick. 1.44. 1.45. 1.45. 1.57. I want you to see a 1.3 tempo and I don’t want you to jump to a 1.5 tempo. You can win this heat. Just trust your instincts and trust yourself.”
Hello Tricia Always nice to see classy and personable Trisha Harm. She was a grad assistant with the women’s program two years ago and she is now in her second year as a fulltime assistant coach with Miami (Fla.).
Where’s Stefanie? Speaking of assistants: Ohio State assistant Stefanie Williams, who like Trisha was a champion swimmer on some champion Georgia teams, isn’t in town. She is at the senior national short course championships in Seattle, Wash.,…recruiting. Hopefully enjoying some tasty Dungeness crab, too. It’s high in protein. And it has a delicately sweet taste.
NCAA “B” Cuts Too many to count, between the morning prelims and the evening finals. We’ll start Ohio State’s official tally Saturday.
First of Four Big Meets This is the first of four big-time championship swimming and diving meets at the spectacular McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Admission is Free Stop by tomorrow for second-day action at the Invite. Prelims start at 10 a.m. and finals begin at 5 p.m. Admission is free. The atmosphere is electric. And it’s toasty warm in McCorkle.
