COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 30th-ranked Ohio State women’s swimming team won the 40-team Chesapeake Energy Elite Pro-Am this weekend in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Buckeyes, who have climbed into the Collegiate Swim Coaches Association of America dual meet rankings for the first time this season, came away with five relay wins and six more individual wins in the Olympic Festival Pool on the campus of Oklahoma City Community College to secure the victory.
Junior Samantha Cheverton, from Lachine, Quebec, swam to a win in the 100 butterfly and was part of four relay wins to lead the Buckeye efforts against collegiate swimmers as well as elite club team members from around the country.
Junior Katelyn Brix, from Brentwood, Calif., took first in the 200 individual medley and senior Colleen Schweitzer, from Highland Park, Colo., won the 200 breaststroke in 2:16.16. Freshman Emily Creran, from Haddonfield, N.J., swam to a victory in the 200 backstroke and another freshman, Shannon Draves, from Gilbertsville, Pa., picked up a win in the 200 butterfly and another in the 50 butterfly.
The team win was really the result of solid morning preliminary session racing up-and-down the roster for coach Bill Dorenkott’s team.
“While this meet wasn’t run in exactly the Big Ten and NCAA championships format that our prior two three-day meets were run, the efforts in the water and the preparation in between sessions were similar,” Dorenkott said. “Once again, we wanted to swim well in the morning sessions to put ourselves in a position to score points during the finals, and that’s what we did.”
Buckeyes were positioned in final races more than 50 times during the weekend, with these three swimmers leading the way in finals swims:
- Cheverton (5): 1st 100 fly; 2nd 200 free; 2nd 500 free; 2nd 200 fly; 4th 200 back;
- Anita Beck (4): 5th 200 fly; 7th 200 free; 8th 100 fly; 8th 500 free; and
- Emily Creran (4): 1st 200 back; 3rd 400 IM; 5th 200 IM; 5th 100 back.
Swimming in three finals were Brix (200 and 400 IM, and 200 breaststroke), Jill Lockhart (200 and 400 IM, and 200 back) and Megan Detro (50, 100 and 200 free).
In addition to those previously mentioned above, Ohio State received second-place efforts in six other events, including by Catherine Eitel (100 breaststroke), Shannon Draves (100 fly), Lockhart (400 IM), Detro (50, 100 and 200 free), Megan Alexander (200 breaststroke), Lauren Massey (100 back) and Kimberly Bowman (50 fly).
The Buckeyes will head home for the holiday break this week, returning to campus Dec. 29 to begin preparation for the second half of the season. The team will compete next Jan. 9 at Toledo and Jan. 10 at home vs. Wright State.
