COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming team capped a busy six days with a 128-68 win over Cleveland State Tuesday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Junior Samantha Cheverton and freshman Megan Detro each won a pair of races for the Buckeyes, who improved to 2-0 with the win. Cleveland State, off to one of its best starts, is now 9-3.
The Buckeyes travelled to West Lafayette, Ind., last Thursday, competed in prelims and finals events Friday, Saturday and Sunday, returned home about 10 p.m. Sunday night, practiced Monday afternoon and then met the Vikings, who have one of their strongest teams ever under coach Wally Morton.
“This is Cleveland State’s best team ever…hands down,” Ohio State coach and Cleveland State swimming alum and graduate Bill Dorenkott said.
Ohio State’s team will now practice Wednesday morning before heading home – after classes – to be with family and friends for a well deserved holiday break.
“This was a good meet tonight to swim some off events,” Dorenkott said. “We’ll work out in the morning and then give the team a break to go home. This has been a hard time of the year to focus. Nine weeks of classes plus their athletics work and on top of being away from home for the first time for some. I think they are looking forward to Thanksgiving.”
First, there was the matter of competing against the Vikings, though. The 200 medley relay team of Detro, Colleen Schweitzer, Kelsey Moran and Farriss Blaskovitz opened the meet with a win in 1:48.35.
Cheverton followed with her first win of the evening, in the 1000 freestyle in 10:09.20. She later would add a win in the 100 butterfly in 56.93 with Anita Beck second.
Detro picked up her first win of the night in the 200 freestyle in 1:51.59 (Angela Severn was second) and added a 100 backstroke win in 58.30 during the second half of the meet. Her backstroke win led a 1-2-3 sweep for Ohio State with Elisabeth Tavierne and Moran finishing second and third, respectively.
A couple of freshmen won the sprint freestyles. Kimberly Bowman won the 50 free in 24.03 with Jackie Brousseau second in 24.05. And Shannon Draves won the 100 freestyle in 52.59. Natalie Nichols (500 free in 5:02.01) and Catherine Eitel (100 breaststroke in 1:04.52) closed out the Buckeyes’ individual event winners.
The 800 free relay team of Katelyn Brix, Emily Creran, Haley Mitchell and Draves capped the evening with a win in a time of 7:39.03.
