Ohio State Concludes Action at Purdue Invite – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team completed action Sunday at the Purdue Invitational in fifth place. The Buckeyes totaled 446 points during the three-day event that featured a championship format agenda designed to acclimate the teams to the racing regime that will be experienced in February and March at the Big Ten and NCAA championships, respectively.
Diver Katie Bell was the highest-placing Buckeye on Sunday. The senior, who won a U.S. Diving national championship this summer, placed second on the 10-meter platform event with 258.80 points.
Junior Samantha Cheverton, who led Ohio State during the meet with two NCAA “B” qualifying swims (500 freestyle and the 200 freestyle), was the highest placing swimmer with a third-place effort in the opening event of the final day: the 200 backstroke. Emily Creran and Jill Lockhart were in the consolation finals and placed ninth and 15th, respectively.
Two freshmen – Shannon Draves and Megan Detro – and sophomore Natalie Nichols also had championship final swims. Draves was fourth in the 200 butterfly in 2:01.10. Nichols was seventh in the timed final of the 1650 freestyle in 16:56.96 and Detro was eighth in the 100 freestyle in 50.81.
Additionally, Colleen Schweitzer and Katelyn Brix scored points for the Buckeyes in the 200 breaststroke, finishing 10th and 12th, respectively; Anita Beck scored in the 200 fly, finishing 13th; Angela Severn was 10th in the 1650 freestyle and Brix was 12th in the 200 breaststroke.
The 400 freestyle relay team of Detro, Beck, Cheverton and Lockhart placed fourth in a time of 3:26.06.
The Buckeyes return home to the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion for a Tuesday, Nov. 24, meet against Cleveland State. Starting time for the double-dual meet with the OSU and CSU men’s teams is 5 p.m.
A few notes from the Purdue Invitational Weekend:
- In addition to Samantha Cheverton’s two NCAA “B” qualifying swims this weekend, Ohio State qualified two relays for the NCAA championships: the 200 medley relay team of Kelsey Moran, Catherine Eitel, Shannon Draves and Megan Detro set a school-record with an NCAA “B” qualifying standard time of 1:42.38; and the 800 free relay team of Detro, Anita Beck, Draves and Cheverton placed second in an NCAA “B” time of 7:18.15.
- Cheverton led the way with three championship final races (500 free, 200 free and 100 backstroke).
- Freshmen Detro (50 and 100 free) and Draves (100 and 200 butterfly) each swam in two championship finals.
