Buckeyes Fall, 3-1, to Top-Ranked Penn State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (14-4 overall, 2-3 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team extended top-ranked Penn State (17-0, 5-0) to four sets in a 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-15, 25-13) Nittany Lion victory. Ohio State’s Kristen Dozier recorded a team-high 12 points with 11 kills and two assist blocks for the Buckeyes. PSU’s Megan Hodge scored a match-high 19 points for the Nittany Lions with 18 kills and two assist blocks.
Ohio State started the match with a 2-0 lead in set one with a Katie Dull kill and an Anna Szerszen solo block. A Darcy Dorton kill cut the lead to one at 2-1. A Szerszen kill and her ace serve gave OSU a 4-1 lead. Two Penn State errors expanded the lead to 6-1. Penn State responded with a Blair Brown kill, an Alyssa D’Errico ace serve and an OSU error to trail, 6-4. Kills from Arielle Wilson and Dozier made it 7-5. Penn State tied the set at seven with kills from Brown and Wilson. Kills from Hodge and Ashley Hughes made it eight-all. The Nittany Lions opened a 12-8 lead with two kills from Wilson, a Glass-Wilson block and a Dorton kill. Penn State controlled the set reaching set point with a Hodge kill at 24-17. Hodge ended the set with a kill at 25-17 to give Penn State a 1-0 lead in the match. The Nittany Lions hit .379 for the set to .077 for Ohio State.
Tied at one in set two, a Dorton kill, a Brown-Fatima Balza block and a Balza-Dorton block gave Penn State a 4-1 lead. A Kelli Barhorst kill made it 4-2. Kills from Dorton and Cathy Quilico gave Penn State a 6-2 lead. At 10-6, a Wilson ace serve gave Penn State a five point lead. Kills from Emily Danks and Szerszen and two Nittany Lion errors cut the lead to one at 11-10. At 13-12, a Hodge kill gave Penn State a 14-12 lead. Ohio State tied the set at 14 with a kill from Hughes and a solo block by Danks. The score reached 20-all as Penn State called time out. A Nittany Lion error and a kill from Danks gave Ohio State a 22-20 lead. Hodge, with a kill, cut the lead to one at 22-21. A kill from Danks made it 23-21 as Penn State called time out. The Nittany Lions, with a Glass kill, cut the lead to one at 23-22 as Ohio State called time out. A kill from Danks gave the Buckeyes set point at 24-22. A Buckeye error stopped the set point to make it 24-23. Ohio State won the set, 25-23, with a kill from Barhorst to tie the match at one set each. The Buckeyes hit .455 in the set to .241 for Penn State.
The third set saw the teams exchange points to reach six-all. Penn State scored the next nine points to open a 15-6 lead. The run included two OSU errors, four kills from Hodge and three Glass-Wilson blocks. At 18-9, kills from Brown and Dorton and an ace serve from Glass took the lead to 12 at 21-9. A Dozier kill and a Szerszen-Dozier block cut the lead to 21-11. Penn State reached set point at 24-13 from a Buckeye error. Kills from Allie Schwarzwalder and Dull stopped two set points to cut the lead to 24-15. The Nittany Lions won the set at 25-15 with a kill from Glass to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Penn State hit .310 for the set to .027 for Ohio State.
Ohio State scored the first four points in the fourth set with kills from Hughes and Dozier, a Sarah Mignin ace serve and a Penn State error. A Dorton-Balza block and a Dorton kill cut the lead to 4-2. Kills from Dull and Dorton made it 5-3. A Schwarzwalder kill made it 6-3. Blocks from Brown and Balza and Brown and Wilson and a Wilson kill tied the set at six. Tied at eight, an OSU error and a Dorton kill gave Penn State a 10-8 lead. Two kills from Dull and one from Glass made it 11-10 Nittany Lions. Penn State scored the next five points starting with kills from Balza and Dorton and an OSU error as OSU called time out at 14-10, PSU. A block from Brown and Balza and a Buckeye error completed the run to open a 16-10 lead. Penn State used a 9-3 run to close out the set reaching match point at 24-13 with a Hodge kill. Hodge ended the set, 25-13, with a kill to win the match, 3-1. Penn State hit .483 for the set to OSU’s .000.
Penn State hit .353 for the match to .132 for Ohio State. The Nittany Lions had a 57-46 margin in kills and a 4-2 advantage in ace serves. PSU’s D’Errico posted a match-high two aces. The Buckeyes gave up seven service errors to six for Penn State. Defensively, the Nittany Lions had a 50-40 advantage in digs. PSU’s Glass and Buckeye Chelsea Noble shared match-high honors with 13 digs each. At the net, Penn State had 18 team blocks to OSU’s four. Balza posted a match-high 12 assist blocks in the match. At setter, Glass had a match-high 47 assists for Penn State while OSU’s Hughes recorded 35.
Ohio State will play the next three matches on the road, starting this Friday at 6 p.m. CT against fifth-ranked Minnesota (13-3, 4-0) in the Sports Pavilion.
