COLUMBUS, Ohio – The start of the 2009-10 Ohio State women’s swimming season will take place Friday at 5 p.m. at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion as the team holds its annual Scarlet and Gray meet. There is no admission charge for the meet, which will be held in conjunction with the men’s Scarlet and Gray meet.
This unofficial start to the season will kick off Year 2 of the Bill Dorenkott coaching era at Ohio State. The 14-year head coaching veteran, who has three Big Ten championships on his resume from his time as head coach at Penn State, is enthusiastic but modest about his second season with the program.
“I am pleased with the rate of improvement we have seen with our swimmers,” Dorenkott said. “While nobody is happy with where we finished in the Big Ten last year, there is a synergy here that is building. We have swimmers who want to compete and want to get better.”
Dorenkott and his assistants – Stefanie Williams, the Georgia All-American who was part of three national championship squads, and graduate assistant coach Susan Johnson – will be relying on a corps of seven seniors for leadership and direction on a team that features 15 freshmen and sophomores.
One of those seniors – Megan Alexander – swam in a championship final in two events at the 2009 Big Ten championships, finishing seventh in the 100 breaststroke and eighth in the 200 breaststroke. Junior Samantha Cheverton was seventh in the 200 backstroke.

At the Schottenstein Center, a 7 p.m. concert by the Zac Brown Band will complete the evening.
The Official Start of the Season
