WTRK: Best of the Midwest Await Buckeyes at Indiana Relays – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio Thirteen days after an impressive showing against some of the South’s top runners, the Ohio State women’s track and field team will challenge the best of the Midwest at the Indiana Relays Jan. 30-31 in Bloomington, Ind. The Friday-Saturday event will feature several national qualifiers and professional athletes amongst a talented field that includes Big Ten rivals Michigan, Indiana and Purdue, as well as Notre Dame. Preliminaries are scheduled to being at 3 p.m. ET Friday at Indiana’s Gladstein Fieldhouse, with Saturday’s final events beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Freshman Step Up on the Big Stage
Ohio State freshman runners hold top times in five individual field events this season. Ashley Galbraith has been commanding in the high jump, averaging 1.69m through two meets. Her 1.72 jump at the Rev. Mike Hout Invite Jan.10 is the fourth best jump in the Big Ten conference so far this year. Bridget Jacobs and Kelcey McKinney have set lofty standards in the long and triple jumps, setting their top marks at 5.60m and 11.42m, respectively. Maggie Mullen’s 12.83m shot put and Alexa Dorricott’s 3.36m pole vault have coaches excited about the future.
Favours Out to Quick Start
Senior sprinter Ayrizanna Favours has started the 2009 season with a bang, setting Top 5 times in the Big Ten in both the 200 and 400m dashes. In addition, the 4×400 relay team, featuring Favours, is second in the league to Illinois after posting their impressive run at the Kentucky Invite. Favours will face-off with the owner of the conference’s top time in the 400m, Indiana junior Molly Beckwith, this weekend in Bloomington.
Last Time Out
Ohio State turned in several Top 5 finishes against the best of the South at the Kentucky Invitational Jan. 17. Freshman Ashley Galbraith led OSU with a fourth place tie in the high jump at 1.66m. Ayrizanna Favours sprinted her way to a fifth place finish in the 400m dash with a time of 55.62, while Ashley Caldwell (13th) and Shaniqua McGinnis (14th) followed closely behind. The mile run saw two Buckeyes finish in the Top 10 with junior Emily Thompson in sixth with a time of 4:54.03 and sophomore Jordan Jennewine in ninth at 4:58.22. The 4×400 relay team of Favours, Caldwell, McGinnis and Letecia Wright closed the meet on a high note, finishing fifth out of 22 teams with an impressive time of 3:45.06.
