Women’s Volleyball: Ohio State Defeats Idaho State, 3-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio Behind a ten-kill, five-block performance by Kristen Dozier, the Ohio State women’s volleyball team (4-1 overall; 0-0 Big Ten) defeated Idaho State (0-4), 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-15) in first day action at the Best Western Shocker Volleyball Classic. Dozier posted a match-high 12.5 points with Katie Dull adding 11.5 and Chelsea Noble 10.5. Dull had nine kills, an ace serve, a solo block and one assist block with Noble adding five kills, three ace serves, a solo block and three assist blocks. Bengal Emily Beardmore had a team-high 9 points for the Bengals with eight kills and two assist blocks.
Set one saw Ohio State open the set with a Dull kill and an Allie Schwarzwalder-Betsy Hone block for a 2-0 lead. A Beardmore kill made it 2-1. A Dull kill, a Bengal error and a Hone ace serve made it 5-1 Ohio State. Leading, 7-3, an Idaho State service error, two Noble-Dozier blocks and a Dozier kill opened an 11-3 lead. The Buckeyes held a 22-11 lead before an OSU service error and kills from Emily Waldron and Sarah Carson cut the lead to 22-14. Consecutive kills by Noble, Dozier and Hone gave Ohio State a 25-14 set one victory. The Buckeyes hit .478 in the set to .036 for the Bengals. Dull posted five kills in the set with Kaila Calhoun and Dozier adding three each.
Ohio State opened set two with an ace serve from Noble and an Idaho State error to take a 2-0 lead. The Buckeyes held a 4-1 lead before an OSU error, a Brenda Cooper-Britta Bartschi block and an Emily Waldron kill tied the set at four. Tied at seven, the Bengals took a 10-7 lead with kills from Sarah Carson and Karissa Legaux and an OSU error. A Noble kill and two Bengal errors tied the set at 10. Idaho State held several one-point leads, the last at 13-12. A Dull kill tied the set at 13. A Dull solo block, a Schwarzwalder-Dull block and a Bengal error opened a 16-13 Ohio State lead. The Buckeyes, leading 21-17, saw the Bengals use kills from Carson and Beardmore and an OSU error to cut the lead to one a 21-20. A Dozier kill and a Bengal error made it 23-30, OSU. Idaho State made it 23-21 with a Carson kill. Back-to-back kills from Dozier gave Ohio State a 25-21 set two victory. The Buckeyes hit .324 in the set to .100 for Idaho State. Dozier recorded six kills in the set with Noble and Dull adding three each.
With five lead changes and seven ties, set three was tied at nine. Ohio State scored the next eight points to open a 17-9 lead. The run began with a Noble solo block, a Noble kill and a Hone-Dozier block to make it 12-9 as Idaho State called time out. A Bengal error, a Noble-Dozier block and a Calhoun ace serve made it 15-9 as Idaho State again called time out. Another Calhoun ace serve and a Dozier kill completed the run to give the Buckeyes a 17-9 lead. A Cooper kill stopped the run at 17-10. A Hone-Dozier block and back-to-back aces from Noble pushed the lead to 20-10. Leading 22-14, a Hone kill and a Schwarzwalder-Calhoun block set match point at 24-14. A Beardmore kill stopped the match point at 24-15. The Buckeyes closed out the set with a Schwarzwalder kill to win the set, 25-15, and the match, 3-0. In the set, Idaho State hit .050 to Ohio State’s .043. Each Buckeye starter had one kill in the set with Calhoun, Noble and Hone recording two aces each.
Ohio State hit .287 for the match to .068 for Idaho State. The Buckeyes had a 35-26 margin in kills and a 12-2 advantage in ace serves. Hone produced a career-high four aces with Noble adding three. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 37-28 edge in digs with Calhoun recording a season-high 12 and Noble an season-high 11. At the net, OSU had a 12-3 margin in team blocks. Both Schwarzwalder and Dozier had a match-high five assists in the match. Buckeye Hone recorded a match-high 30 assists in the contest.
The Buckeyes continue play in the Best Western Shocker Volleyball Classic Saturday at 9:30 a.m. EDT when they face Cal State Bakersfield (0-3) and close out the Classic against host Wichita State (4-0) at 9 p.m. EDT.
