Women’s Volleyball: Buckeyes Begin 12-Day Road Trip with Shocker Volleyball Classic at Wichita State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (2-1) women’s volleyball team begins a 12-day road trip this week that will take it to Wichita State this weekend and Los Angeles, Calif. next week. The Buckeyes will play Thursday and Saturday at the 13-match, six-team Best Western Shocker Volleyball Classic in Wichita, Kan. Ohio State then travels to California to face Loyola Marymount Wednesday, Sept. 10 and Southern California Friday, Sept. 12.
Ohio State opens play Thursday against Coastal Carolina (2-1) at 9:30 a.m. and faces Idaho State (0-3) at 1:30 p.m. The Buckeyes complete play in the Classic Saturday with an 8:30 a.m. match against Cal State Bakersfield (0-3) and close out the Classic against host Wichita State (3-0) at 8 p.m.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
Head coach Geoff Carlston is in his first season with the Buckeyes. Ohio State is 2-1 on the season after finishing second at the Sports Imports Classic. The Buckeyes opened the season with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-15) win over Toledo. OSU then lost, 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 26-24, 28-26) to Xavier and defeated Youngstown State, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-15).
Leading the Buckeyes in points per set is Katie Dull at 5.40. Kaila Calhoun ranks second at 3.80 with Kristen Dozier third at 3.70. Dull is the team leader in kills per set at 4.50. Dozier ranks second at 3.20 with Calhoun third at 2.90. OSU’s top percentage hitter is Calhoun at .446. Dull ranks second at .436 with Chelsea Noble third at .279. At setter, Ashley Hughes is averaging 10.67 assists per set with Betsy Hone having a 9.33 average. Tied for the team lead in aces per set are Calhoun and Noble at .40. Each has four aces. Dull ranks third in aces per set at .30 with three aces. Allie Schwarzwalder leads the team in blocks per set at 1.10 with two solos and nine assists. Dull ranks second at .90 with three solos and six assists with Calhoun third at .80 on two solos and six assists. Leading the team in digs per set at 2.60 is Calhoun. Susan Halverson ranks second at 2.56 with Noble third at 2.20. Halverson has a team-high .961 reception percentage with two errors in 51 attempts. Noble ranks second at .941 with five errors in 85 attempts.
As a team, Ohio State is averaging 19.80 points, 15.50 kills and 14.70 assists per set. The Buckeyes average 1.60 aces, 11.30 digs and 2.70 blocks per set. OSU opponents are averaging 14.00 points, 11.00 kills and 9.90 assists per set. They are averaging 1.30 aces, 9.10 digs and 1.70 blocks per game.
A LOOK AT COASTAL CAROLINA
Head coach Kristen Bauer is in her 10th season for the Lady Chanticleers. Coastal Carolina opened the season with a 2-1 record at the Hawthorn Suites Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Va. They lost 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 24-26, 25-16) at Virginia Tech and defeated UMES, 3-2 (16-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-15, 15-9) and Winston-Salem, 3-0 (25-4, 25-9, 25-7). Chelsey Kimes has a team-high 3.75 kills per set for the Lady Chanticleers. Brett Starbuck has a 3.58 digs per set average to lead the squad with Jill Nyhoff collecting a team-high 1.08 blocks per set with five solos and eight assist blocks.
OHIO STATE – COASTAL CAROLINA SERIES
Ohio State and Coastal Carolina are meeting for the first time.
A LOOK AT IDAHO STATE
Head coach Chad Teichert is in his first season with the Bengals. Idaho State began the season with three losses at the MCM Elegante Lobos Classic Tournament. They lost 3-1 (25-13, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20) to Loyola Marymount, 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-21) to New Mexico and 3-1 (25-12, 25-21, 24-26, 30-28) to Central Arkansas. Emily Waldron has a team-high 2.91 kills per set average with Paige Palmer averaging 4.82 digs per set to lead the team. Britta Bartschi has a team-high .64 blocks per set average with a solo block and six assists.
OHIO STATE – IDAHO STATE SERIES
The Ohio State – Idaho State series is tied, 1-1. The Buckeyes won, 3-0 (15-7, 15-7, 15-7) in 1982 at Idaho State and lost in 1987, 3-1 (15-1, 15-6, 8-15, 15-7) at the Brigham Young Invitational.
A LOOK AT CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD
Head coach John Price is in his 13th season for the Roadrunners. Cal State Bakersfield opened the season at the Fresno State Tournament with three losses. The Roadrunners lost 3-2 (23-25, 33-31, 20-25, 25-17, 15-12) to Fresno State, 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 31-29) at Saint Mary’s College and 3-1 (25-16, 11-25, 25-22, 25-21) to UC Davis. Sarah Norman has a team-high 3.33 kills per set average for the Roadrunners. Leading the team in digs per set is Lindy DeGeare with a 2.92 average. At the net, Rosemary Stribling and Alysia Baker share team-high blocking honors with .50 blocks per set. Stribling has a solo and five assists while Baker has six assist blocks.
OHIO STATE – CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD SERIES
Ohio State won the only meeting with Cal State Bakersfield. The Buckeyes won a pool play match, 2-0 (15-4, 15-4) at the Cal-Davis Invitational in 1984.
A LOOK AT WICHITA STATE
Head coach Chris Lamb is in his ninth season for the Shockers. Wichita State opened the season with three wins at the Sooner Legends Nike Invitational at Oklahoma. The Shockers defeated No. 10 Cal Poly 3-2 (16-25, 12-25, 25-19, 25-21, 15-8), Oklahoma, 3-0 (32-30, 25-13, 26-24) and Michigan State, 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 27-25, 25-19). Emily Stockman has a team-high 3.25 kills per set average. Kelly Broussard leads the team with a 5.67 digs per set average and Sarah McGee has a team-high 1.25 blocks per set average with a solo block and 14 assists.
OHIO STATE – WICHITA STATE SERIES
Ohio State and Wichita State are meeting for the first time.
OHIO STATE REACHES 800 WINS
Ohio State’s 3-1 win over Youngstown State in the Sports Imports Classic marked the 800th win for the program in the 38-year history of women’s vollyball. The Buckeyes rank third in total wins in the Big Ten Conference. Penn State is first with 979 and Minnesota is second with 920.
OHIO STATE HAS THREE MATCHES ON THE BIG TEN NETWORK
Ohio State will have three Big Ten matches telecast live on the Big Ten Network this season. Both Michigan matches and OSU’s home match with Northwestern will be broadcast. The Buckeyes will open the Big Ten Conference season hosting Michigan at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 and face the Wolverines in Ann Arbor at 7 p.m. Nov. 12. The Buckeyes will host Northwestern at 8 p.m. Nov. 8 in St. John Arena as part of a Big Ten Network doubleheader.
HEAD COACH GEOFF CARLSTON
Geoff Carlston is in his first season at Ohio State. He came to Ohio State after spending five years as head coach of Ohio University where he built an outstanding program. His squads played in five NCAA tournaments, reaching regional play in 2005. At Ohio, Carlston guided the Bobcats to five-consecutive Mid American Conference championships with an overall record of 144-22. He had a MAC conference record of 78-2 and was 14-1 in the conference tournament, winning four of five.
Carlston was named the MAC Coach of the Year four times and was twice named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year.
He began collegiate coaching with three years at Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) where he posted a 49-42 record. His career record is 195-65.
BUCKEYES FINISH SECOND AT SPORTS IMPORTS CLASSIC
Ohio State opened the season with a second place finish last week at the Sports Imports Classic. Buckeye Katie Dull was named to the all-tournament team. Xavier won the Classic with a 3-0 record. Youngstown State was third at 1-2 and Toledo finished fourth at 0-3.

DULL LEADS THE BUCKEYES
Katie Dull was the top scorer for the Buckeyes in the opening week of the season. She averaged 5.40 points per set in the three matches at the Sports Imports Classic. Dull produced career highs of 26.0 points and 23 kills in the Xavier match. She posted a team-high 11 kills against Toledo and added 11 kills against Youngstown State.
DOZIER HAS A CAREER MATCH AGAINST XAVIER
Kristen Dozier had career highs of 20.5 points and 19 kills in the Xavier match. Dozier recorded six kills against Toledo and seven against Youngstown State. She is averaging 3.20 kills per set and is averaging .60 blocks per set with two solos and four assists.
HUGHES STARTS AT SETTER
Ashley Hughes started at setter in all three matches last weekend. She had five starts in the two previous years. Hughes is averaging 10.67 assists per set on the season and had a season-high 39 assists against Xavier. In the opening match against Toledo, she had 25 assists and recorded a career-high seven kills in seven attempts against the Rockets. Hughes closed out the weekend with 32 assists against Youngstown State.
CALHOUN SETS THREE CAREER-HIGHS AGAINST YOUNGSTOWN STATE
Kaila Calhoun produced career highs of 15.5 points, 15 kills and a .591 hitting percentage against Youngstown State. She added seven digs against the Penguins. Calhoun had seven kills (.467) and a match-high 10 digs against Toledo and had seven kills, nine digs and five total blocks (1-4) against Xavier.
SCHWARZWALDER TOPS OSU IN BLOCKS PER SET
Allie Schwarzwalder, in the first three starts of her career, averaged 1.10 blocks per set last weekend. She totaled two solos and nine assists in the three matches. Schwarzwalder had a career-high five total blocks against Xavier with a solo block and four assists. She had four kills in that match. Schwarzwalder had a career-high six kills against Toledo while hitting a career-high .600. She added five kills and four blocks (1-3) in the Youngstown State match.
NOBLE RETURNS TO ACTION
After sitting out last season, Chelsea Noble returned to action last weekend. A starting setter at Tennessee for two seasons, Noble was moved to outside hitter for her three starts last weekend. She produced Ohio State career highs of nine kills and nine digs against Youngstown State. In the opening match against Toledo, Noble had four kills and six digs and had four kills and seven digs in the Youngstown State match. In the three matches, she handled a team-high 85 reception attempts and had a .941 reception percentage.
HALVERSON SEES ACTION AT LIBERO
Susan Halverson started at libero in all three matches last weekend. She had a career-high nine digs in the Xavier match. Halverson ranks second on the team in digs per set with a 2.56 average. She had six digs in the Toledo match and added eight against Youngstown State. Halverson handled the second most reception attempts last weekend with 51 and had a .961 reception percentage.
KASTEIN HAS TWO STARTS AT DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST
Laura Kastein started as a defensive specialist in two matches at the Sports Imports Classic. She had three digs against Toledo and five against Xavier in her two starts. She added two digs off the bench against Youngstown State. Kastein averaged 1.43 digs per set and recorded an ace serve against Youngstown State.
