Women’s Volleyball: Ohio State Sweeps Duquesne for Coach Carlston’s 200th Career Victory – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (7-3 overall) opened play at the Kent State/Mizuno Open Friday with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-21) victory over Duquesne (9-3). The Buckeye win marks the 200th career victory for first-year coach Geoff Carlston. He has a 10-year record of 200-67. Kristen Dozier scored a match-high 16.5 points for Ohio State with Kelli Barhorst adding 14 and Anna Szerszen 12. Dozier posted 13 kills, a solo block and five assist blocks for the Buckeyes. The 14 points for Barhorst is a career high with 10 kills, a solo block and six assists. Szerszen had eight kills, an ace serve and six assist blocks. Jessica Artman had a team-high 13 points for Duquesne with 10 kills and three ace serves.
Set one opened with an Artman kill and an OSU error for a 2-0 Duquesne lead. A Duquesne error and a Lisa Prang kill tied the set at two. OSU took a 3-2 lead with a Barhorst kill. An Artman kill tied the set at four and a Liz Homan kill gave Duquesne a 5-4 lead. With Duquesne leading 8-7, a Chelsea Tillotson ace serve gave the Dukes a 9-7 lead. Buckeye kills from Kaila Calhoun and Barhorst tied the set at nine. A Duquesne error and a Calhoun-Barhorst block gave Ohio State an 11-9 lead. An OSU error cut the lead to 11-10. A solo block by Dozier and a Szerszen kill made it 13-10. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to 23-17 where a Barhorst kill made it set point at 24-17. Two Artman kills stopped OSU set points to cut the margin to 24-19. Ohio State won the set, 25-19, with a Szerszen-Barhorst block. The Buckeyes hit .429 in the set to .205 for the Dukes.
Trailing, 2-1, in set two, a Szerszen-Barhorst block tied the set at two. A Barhorst kill and a Duquesne error made it 4-2. Duquesne kills from Amanda Humphrey and Artman tied the set at four and a Brittany Poling kill gave Duquesne a 5-4 lead. Two kills from Szerszen and a Duquesne error gave the Buckeyes a 7-5 lead. A Homan-Poling block cut the margin to 7-6. Dozier, with two kills, gave Ohio State a 9-6 lead. With Duquesne trailing, 15-12, a Mullen ace serve cut the OSU lead to two at 15-13. Ohio State scored the next five points to open a 20-13. The run began with a Szerszen kill and back-to-back blocks from Barhorst and Betsy Hone to make the lead, 18-13. A Barhorst kill and a Duquesne error took the lead to five at 20-13. Leading, 23-15, a Dozier kill gave Ohio State set point at 24-15. The Buckeyes won the set with a kill from Hone, winning 25-15, to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .312 for the set to .000 for Duquesne.
Tied at two in set three, Duquesne took a 5-2 lead with a kill and ace serve from Artman and an OSU error. The Dukes held the lead, expanding it to six at 15-9. Two Barhorst kills and a Duquesne error cut the margin to three at 15-12. Kills from Humphrey and Szerszen moved the score to 15-13. A Chelsea Noble ace serve, a Duquesne error and a Dozier-Hone block tied the set at 16. Ohio State took an 18-16 lead with a Dozier-Szerszen block and a Szerszen kill. With a Kristen Hammergren kill and an Artman ace serve, Duquesne tied the set at 18. The Buckeyes regained the lead with a Szerszen kill at 19-18 and a Duquesne error made it 20-18. At 21-19, a Duquesne error and a Dozier kill gave Ohio State a four-point lead at 23-19. Duquesne cut the lead to 23-20 with a Mullen kill. Ohio State reached match point with a Dozier kill at 24-20. The Dukes stopped the first match point with a Humphrey kill at 24-21. The Buckeyes won the set, 25-21, with a Barhorst kill to win the match, 3-0. Ohio State hit .276 in the set to .088 for Duquesne.
Ohio State hit .344 for the match to .104 for Duquesne. The Buckeyes had a 43-33 margin in kills while Duquesne had a five to three advantage in aces. Artman had a match-high three ace serves for the Dukes. The Buckeyes gave up five service errors to four for Duquesne. The Dukes had a 56-45 advantage in digs with OSU’s Noble recording a match-high 15. Tricia Mullen of Duquesne recorded 14. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 13 to three margin in team blocks. OSU’s Barhorst posted a match-high seven blocks with a solo and six assists. Dozier (1-5) and Szerszen (0-6) each contributed six total blocks in the contest. Ohio State’s Ashley Hughes recorded a match-high 36 assists in the match while Tillotson had 35 for Duquesne.
The Buckeyes continue play in the Kent State/Mizuno Open against Chicago State (0-12) later today. They will close out play in the Open when they face host Kent State at 7 p.m. Saturday.
