Women’s Volleyball: Ohio State Wins, 3-1, at Loyola Marymount – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (6-2 overall) posted a 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-18) victory at Loyola Marymount (4-3) Wednesday night in Gersten Pavilion. The win comes on the eighth day of a 12-day cross country trip for the Buckeyes who are 4-1 during that time. Ohio State’s Kristen Dozier produced a team-high 18 points against the Lions with 15 kills, two solo blocks and two assist blocks. Kaila Calhoun added 16 points and Chelsea Noble 12 for the Buckeyes. Calhoun had 14 kills, one ace serve and two assist blocks while Noble contributed 12 kills in the contest. Emily Day had a match-high 21.5 points in the match with 20 kills, one solo block and one assist. Megan Nash added 13.5 points for the Lions with 13 kills and an assist block.
Loyola Marymount broke a 3-3 tie with a seven-point run to take a 10-3 lead in set one. The Buckeyes had cut the lead to five at 16-11 and then scored off two Lion errors and a Noble kill to cut the margin to two at 16-14. Trailing, 20-17, a LMU error and an Ashley Hughes kill had the Buckeyes trailing by one at 20-19. A Nash kill and a Lauren Kirk ace serve gave the Lions a 22-19 lead. A Lion kill from Becky Stehling made it 24-21 with Loyola Marymount serving set point. Ohio State stopped two set points with a Noble kill and a Lion error to make it 24-23. A kill from Emily Cheek ended the set at 25-23 for the Lions, giving LMU a 1-0 lead in the match. The Lions hit .143 for the set to .071 for Ohio State.
Tied at one in set two, kills from Kelli Barhorst and Dozier and a Lion error gave Ohio State a 4-1 lead. Leading, 6-5, the Buckeyes scored the next five points to open an 11-5 lead. The run included an Allie Schwarzwalder kill, a Lion error, two aces from Hughes and a Schwarzwalder-Calhoun block. Trailing, 21-16, Loyola Marymount scored the next four points with an Ariana Covington kill and three from Nash to cut the lead to 21-20. Errors by both squads moved the score to 22-21. Kills from Hughes and Dozier gave Ohio State a 24-21 lead and serving set point. A Noble kill ended the set at 25-21, tying the match at one game each. Ohio State hit .243 for the set to .195 for Loyola Marymount.
Set three had four lead changes and nine ties, the last coming at 12-12. Ohio State scored the next five points to open a 17-12 lead. A Dozier kill began the run followed by a Lion error and a kill from Laura Kastein to make it 15-12. A Kastein ace serve and a Noble kill took the lead to 17-12. At 23-18, a Lion kill by Day made it 23-19. The Buckeyes reached set point with a Noble kill at 24-19. A Dozier kill closed out the set at 25-19 to give Ohio State a 2-1 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .333 for the set to .108 for Loyola Marymount.
The Lions took a 1-0 lead in set four with a Nash kill but a Lion error tied the set at one. Ohio State, with a Schwarzwalder-Barhorst block, a Lion error, a Noble kill and a Calhoun ace serve took a 5-1 lead. Two kills by Day and two OSU errors tied the game at five. Ohio State responded with two Noble kills and one from Hughes to take an 8-5 lead. Ohio State maintained the lead and held a 19-16 margin when a Lion error and a Dozier kill gave the Buckeyes a 21-16 margin. A Day kill cut the margin to four at 21-17. Three straight Ohio State points gave the Buckeyes match point at 24-17. The run began with a Dozier kill. A Schwarzwalder-Calhoun block and a Calhoun kill set match point. An OSU error made it 24-18. Calhoun closed out the set with a kill for a 25-18 win to give Ohio State a 3-1 victory in the match. The Buckeyes hit .256 for the set to .241 for Loyola Marymount.
For the match, Ohio State hit .219 to .168 for Loyola Marymount. The Buckeyes had a 56-50 margin in kills and edged the Lions, 4-1 in ace serves. Loyola Marymount had eight service errors to five for OSU. Defensively, Ohio State had a 68-56 advantage in digs with OSU’s Calhoun recording a match-high 18. At the net, the Buckeyes had an 8-4 advantage in team blocks. Dozier produced a match-high four total blocks for the Buckeyes with two solo and two assist blocks. Ohio State’s Hughes had a match-high 43 assists for the Buckeyes while Renee Horton had 34 for the Lions.
The Buckeyes continue play in Los Angeles when they face sixth-ranked Southern California (3-2) Friday at 10 p.m. EDT.
