Women’s Volleyball: Buckeyes Open 2008 With Win Over Toledo – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio Geoff Carlston, first-year Ohio State head coach, notched his first career Buckeye win as the women’s volleyball team (1-0 overall; 0-0 Big Ten) defeated Toledo (0-1 overall; 0-0 MAC), 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-15), Friday afternoon in the first match of the Sports Imports Classic held in St. John Arena.
Three Buckeyes scored 10 or more points in the win, with sophomore Katie Dull leading the way with 13.5 points from 11 kills, two solo blocks and an assist block. Junior setter Ashley Hughes and sophomore Kaila Calhoun scored 10 and 10.5 points, respectively, in the win. For Toledo, Amber Deweerdt led the scoring with 7.5 points from seven kills and an assist block.
“For the first match of the year and playing with a new lineup, we did well,” Carlston said. “It is always good to get a win in the first match of the season. I thought we served aggressively today and we found that sense of urgency we need to play with at the end of the second game.
“Now we turn our focus to Xavier because we are aware they are a good opponent.”
In the first set, the Buckeyes and Rockets battled back and forth in a game that had four lead changes and six tied scores. After being tied at 11-all, Ohio State went on a three-point run with Calhoun, an Elkhart, Ind., native serving two aces and a Toledo attack error. The Buckeyes sealed the win with back-to-back kills from Calhoun and junior captain Chelsea Noble. In the set, Ohio State out hit Toledo, 12-8.
The Rockets scored first in the second set but the Buckeyes quickly jumped to a 6-2 lead from two kills by Dull and a kill by Hughes. With the score at 7-3, Ohio State went on a five-point run to take a 12-3 lead. North Royalton, Ohio, native Allie Schwarzwalder boosted the Buckeye effort, scoring two of her six kills of the match during the run. JuniorKristen Dozier and Dull, a native of Solon, Ohio, took control of the game at the net, combining for four kills late in the second set as Ohio State went on to win the set, 25-11. In the second set, the Buckeyes held a 16-7 kills advantage.
The Buckeyes kept the momentum going in the third set, taking an early 8-2 lead off of four Rocket hitting errors. Strong serving from senior Laura Kastein and Noble propelled in third and final set of the match. Ohio State reached set point, 24-15, off a Dull kill and won the match after Noble, won led the team with 20 serve receives, tallied one of her four kills in the game. The Buckeyes out hit the Rockets 13-9 in the third set.
Game action resumes for Ohio State in the Sports Imports Classic Friday night as they take on Xavier at 7:30 p.m. in St. John Arena. Preceding the Buckeyes-Musketeers game is a 5 p.m. match between Toledo and Youngstown.
