Men’s/Women’s Tennis: Buckeye Update at ITA Summer Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio Members of both the Ohio State men’s and women’s tennis teams continued competition at the 2008 ITA Summer Championships Wednesday hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
In men’s singles, upcoming senior Ty Schaub was able to survive the first and second rounds of the tournament but dropped a 6-4, 6-0 decision to No. 9 Lachlan Ferguson of Indiana. Although all participating Buckeyes are out of the main bracket, rising senior Kurt Zaske defeated Patrick Dwyer 6-4, 6-4 in the consolation singles bracket.
Highlighting the men’s doubles bracket, Mike O’Connell and Schaub advanced to the quarterfinals and will play today for a spot in the semifinals. The Buckeye pair defeated Matt Hansen (Northern Illinois) and Derek Stephens (NC State) in the third round, 8-3. Zaske paired with Andrew Landwerlen from Denver and advanced to the round of 16 before losing to Ball State’s Jose Perdomo and Jorge Rodriguez.
After all six members in women’s singles made it through the first and second rounds Tuesday, two Buckeyes were able to advance into the fourth round. 2007-08 MVP Cami Hubbs kept the Buckeye charge by defeating Katie Kargl 6-2, 6-3 from William & Mary, while upcoming senior Julie Blackmore also advanced passed Akron’s Jeremie Benjamin by walkover.
Soon-to-be senior Julie Voss was eliminated from the singles main bracket after No. 1 seed Laura Vallverdu advanced on a walkover. The last three Buckeyes could not also make it through the third round. Upcoming junior Christina Keesey lost to No. 5 seed Ragini Acharya 6-3, 6-2 and Buckeye newcomers Kirsten Flower and Kelsey Haviland dropped their matches with Flower losing to Virginia’s Claire Bartlett 6-3, 6-3, and Haviland losing to Michigan’s Rika Tatsuno in a third set super tiebreaker 7-6,1-6,1-0(8).
In the women’s consolation singles bracket, Voss lost a 7-5, 5-7, 1-0(7) decision to Minnesota’s Jackie Sperling in the first round.
In women’s doubles, two Buckeye pairs advanced to the semifinals. No. 3 seed Blackmore and Hubbs paired up to become a major threat in the tournament and advanced to the semifinals after defeating Liz Carpenter of Wisconsin and Mallory Voelker of Denver, 8-4. On the other side of the bracket, Flower and Keesey are the No. 5 seed and teamed up to upset Illinois’ No. 4 tandem of Leigh Finnegan and Marissa Lambropoulos, 8-6. Blackmore and Hubbs will face Big Ten rival’s Denise Muresan and Chisako Sugiyama from Michigan in the semifinals, while Flower and Keesey will take on the No. 1 seed Michaela Kissel and Vallverdu from Miami (Fla.).
