COLUMBUS, Ohio Members of the Ohio State women’s tennis team came out strong at the 2008 ITA National Summer Championships Monday with all six participating Buckeyes advancing to the second day of singles play held by Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
After a first round where each Buckeye received a bye, the second round became a stellar all-around performance for the women in Scarlet and Gray. Leading the way in the second round was 2008 team MVP Cami Hubbs, who defeated Vanderbilt’s Hannah Blatt 7-5, 6-2. Hubbs rewrote the Ohio State record books last year by setting the all-time single -season record for singles wins with 36, which was five more wins than the previous record.
Soon-to-be seniors Julie Voss and Julie Blackmore took care of business in the second round with Voss defeating Northwestern’s Stacy Lee and Blackmore shutting out Stacia Kissell 6-0, 6-0. Upcoming junior Christina Keesey followed with a second-round victory over Haille Elmore 7-6, 7-6.
Two new Buckeyes, Kirsten Flower and Kelsey Haviland, continue to compete with their new Buckeye teammates, and both had strong second-round outings. Flower, who comes to Ohio State after two seasons at Georgia Tech, defeated Michelle Murphy as the third seed in the tournament with a 6-0, 6-2 decision. Incoming freshman Haviland continues to be impressive with a second-round win over Alabama’s Taylor Lindsey 7-6, 7-6.
All six Buckeyes will continue tournament play with the third round beginning Tuesday. A Buckeye match to watch for will be Voss, who will try to take down Miami’s (Fla.) Laura Vallverdu, who is the top seed of the championships in singles play.
