Cami Hubbs named team MVP; DiPastina earns Most Improved Award
COLUMBUS, Ohio With the 2007-08 campaign now behind them, Ohio State head coach Chuck Merzbacher announced the team awards for the season at the team banquet, Friday at
The Buckeyes, who had one of the most prolific seasons in team history, tied the program record for wins in a season (19) and also toppled both the singles and doubles individual wins mark in a season. The Scarlet and Gray finished the season ranked No. 33, their highest final rank since 2001. Additionally, Ohio State was No. 6 in the regional rankings at the end of the season.
The team Most Valuable Player was awarded to freshman Cami Hubbs, who in her first year on campus rewrote the Ohio State record books and propelled the Buckeyes to a historic finish. Hubbs set the all-time single season record for singles wins with 36, shattering the previous record of 31. Additionally, her .837 singles winning percentage is the highest for a Buckeye since Ann Wilson owned an .850 mark in 1977. She was named Big Ten Player of the Week for the week of March 24, the first Buckeye freshman to receive the weekly honor.
Angela DiPastina was the recipient of the Most Improved Player award, as she excelled in doubles and her consistent play at the top of the singles lineup allowed for favorable matches down the rest of the lineup. Her 21 singles wins and 23 doubles victories were both career highs, as she was one of six Buckeyes to win 20 singles matches.
The Coaches’ Award went to Christina Keesey, who followed a solid freshman campaign with an outstanding sophomore season. She played at four different spots during the season, but excelled at the No. 4 position, where she went 10-2 on the year.
The Buckeye Power Club award, which is given annually by the strength and conditioning coaches, was given to Julie Voss, who contributed strong performances throughout the year but was especially strong in the fall season, when she racked up eight singles victories.
