Jatsek, Griffin and Favours all advance on day one at Drake University
COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s track and field team had three student-athletes in action on day one of the 2008 NCAA Championship in Des Monies, Iowa, on the campus of Drake University.
Veronica Jatsek had an exciting and tense first day as she only had three throws to qualify for the finals — just four days after she received her degree in Ohio Stadium in construction systems management. Her first two tosses were fouls and she had one final shot to qualify. She made it count and recorded the sixth-best toss in the qualifying round of 203 feet, 4 inches. The toss qualifies her for the final Friday as she looks for the fourth All-America honor of her career. Jatsek was second in her qualifying flight. Jatsek will look to become the first Buckeye thrower to earn fourth-consecutive All-America honors.
Jenna Griffin and Ayrizanna Favours will both secured spots in the semifinals of the 400-meter dash Saturday. Griffin took 10th in the prelims with a time of 53.56. Favours took 15th with a time of 53.45 — Griffin ranked higher as she took second in her heat. Ohio State and Penn State will be the only two universities with two or more runner in the semi-finals.
Action continues tomorrow with freshman Letecia Wright in the 100m hurdles at 4:30 p.m. and the 4×400 semifinals at 7:40 p.m. All times are Central.
