Women’s Swimming & Diving: Davis and Cheverton Earn Top Honors at Annual Banquet – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team handed out its team awards for the 2007-08 season at its annual banquet. Junior Chelsea Davis earned Most Valuable diver, while freshman Samantha Cheverton was named Most Valuable Swimmer.
Davis, from Columbus, won the 3-meter diving title March 21 at the NCAA championships held at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. She also earned All-America honors on the 1-meter, claiming eighth place. Davis captured 10 first-place finishes on both springboard events and never finished lower than third throughout the dual-meet season.
Cheverton, a native of Lachine, Quebec, qualified for the NCAA championships with an A’ standard time in the 200-yard backstroke. She also participated in the 100 butterfly at the national event. Cheverton finished the dual-meet season with a team-high 14 first-place finishes and swam the team’s fastest times in the 200 backstroke, 1000 freestyle and the 100 and 200 butterfly events.
The Rookie of the Year award went to freshmen Bianca Alvarez and Anita Beck. Alvarez, from Miami, Fla., earned All-America honors after placing second on the 3-meter and fifth on the 1-meter springboards at the NCAA championships. She also earned second on the 3-meter at the Big Ten championships.
Beck, a Cincinnati native, led the team at the Big Ten championships and participated in the consolation finals in the 200 butterfly and 200 and 500 freestyles. She finished second on the team with 11 first-place finishes during the dual season. Beck also had team-best times in the 200 and 500 freestyle events.
Heike Gutwein was named Most Improved. The freshman from Rensselaer, Ind., served as a valuable member in the breaststroke events for the Buckeyes. She recorded a lifetime-best time of 1:06.87 in the 100 breaststroke for a fourth-place finish against Northwestern.
Sharing Most Inspirational with Davis was sophomore Jill Lockhart. The Muncie, Ind., native swam an NCAA B’ standard time in the 200 backstroke with a season-best time of 2:00.50 to earn 15th-place at the Big Ten championships. Lockhart never finished lower than fifth in all her events throughout the dual-meet season and recorded team-best times in the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley.
