COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s track and field team opened action at the Big Ten Championships Friday in Champaign, Ill. The Buckeyes were led by senior Veronica Jatsek who dominated the field in the hammer throw to win her second-consecutive Big Ten title. The Buckeyes are currently in third-place with 10 points.
Jatsek won the title with a toss of 203 feet, 6 inches — besting the field by 20 feet, 4 inches. This performance should certainly put her name in the running for athlete of the championships. Jatsek now holds three Big Ten titles for her career and is looking for her fourth All-American honor. Jatsek currently holds the 15th-best toss in the country this season and the third-best toss in the Mideast region.
“I’m really happy to bring another championship home, but now I really want to concentrate on peaking for NCAA’s,” Jatsek said. “Last year I really worked hard to peak at Big Ten’s and didn’t do as well as I wanted to at NCAA’s. This year I toned my training down for this weekend and now I want to go for that big mark at the NCAA championships.”
Ohio State ended day one in third place with 10 points. Iowa leads the way with 21 points and Wisconsin with 20.
Events will resume tomorrow with the final event of the heptathlon and decathlon. Alana Gray finished third in the 100m hurdles portion of the heptathalon and fourth in the shot put.
