Buckeyes hand Hokies first loss of season with 5-2 victory
COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s tennis team (4-0, 0-0 Big Ten) defeated Virginia Tech (3-1, 0-0 ACC), 5-2, Sunday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va. The victory was the second win for the Buckeyes against ACC competition this season.
“We haven’t beaten Virginia Tech in a couple of years now, so it’s nice to be able to finally get that done,” Chuck Merzbacher, Ohio State head coach, said. “Christina Keesey was awesome today, as was Angela DiPastina. We played with heart today and took care of business on the singles court after losing the doubles point.”
In singles, Keesey, a sophomore from Northfield, Minn., claimed the clinching point at the No. 3 spot by beating Jessica Long in a second-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Junior Julie Blackmore delivered another Buckeye win at the No. 4 spot, losing only one game and dropping Jessica Brouwer, 6-0, 6-1.
It took three sets for DiPastina, a junior, to dispatch Yasmin Hamza at the No. 2 spot, coming from behind to win, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
At the No. 5 spot, rookie Cami Hubbs topped Holly Johnson, 6-1, 6-2, to pick up her team-best 18th victory of the season. Senior captain Caitlin O’Keefe dropped Abbey Walker, 6-1, 7-6 (2), to win the No. 6 spot.
At the No. 1 spot, freshman Paloma Escobedo was defeated by Inga Beerman, 6-2, 6-4.
For the second consecutive dual match, the Buckeyes lost the double point. Hubbs and Blackmore provided the only doubles victory, beating Long and Johnson, 8-5.
DiPastina and Keesey fell at the No. 1 spot to Brouwer and Hamza, 8-4. The Hokies also won the No. 3 spot, with Larson and Beerman topping O’Keefe and Escobedo, 8-3.
With the win, the Buckeyes are now 3-3 all-time against the Hokies.
Following a brief break, the Buckeyes will return to the court Feb. 14 to face No. 12 Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Ind.
