Ohio State and McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion to Host Women’s Big Ten Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio The Ohio State University Department of Athletics and the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion will host the Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 21-23. The meet represents the eighth major event hosted by the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in its third season of operation with more events still to come this year.
The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team, under the direction of swimming coach Jeanne Fleck and diving coach Vince Panzano, will be the team hosts for the championships, with Indiana coming in as the defending Big Ten champion.
The Buckeyes will be looking to improve on last year’s eighth-place finish and an emerging group of young and talented swimmers and divers are on hand to provide the spark. Among the Buckeye swimmers to watch during this meet:
- Freshman Samantha Cheverton has already qualified for the NCAA championships in the 200 backstroke and she owns the second-fastest time in the Big Ten to date in the event.Cheverton, from Lachine, Quebec, also has NCAA “B” cut times in the 500-yard freestyle, 200 freestyle, 1000 freestyle and in the 200 butterfly.
- Freshman Anita Beck, from Cincinnati, has top 20 Big Ten times in four events: 200 freestyle, 1000 freestyle, 1650 freestyle and 200 butterfly.
- Sophomore Jill Lockhart, Muncie, Ind., has three top 20 Big Ten times: 100 and 200 backstroke events and 400 individual medley.
- Freshman Katelyn Brix, from Brentwood, Calif., has top 20 Big Ten times in the 1650 freestyle and 400 individual medley.
- Sophomore Colleen Schweitzer, Highlands Ranch, Calif., has a top 10 Big Ten time in the 200 breaststroke.
- And sophomore Megan Alexander has top 15 Big Ten times in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, respectively.
Panzano’s divers have been nearly unbeatable this season, winning 19 of the 20 dual meet competitions they’ve competed in. Leading the way:
- Junior Chelsea Davis, from Columbus and Worthington-Kilbourne H.S., has won a total of nine times on the one- and three-meter events and has been named Big Ten Diver of the Week twice already. Davis missed the Big Ten championships last year due to an injury but won the Big Ten 3-meter title in 2006 as a freshman at Northwestern.
- Freshman Bianca Alvarez, from Miami, Fla., has 10 wins between the two springboard events and has also been named Diver of the Week by the Big Ten twice.

The Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion
Considered one of the finest competition pools and diving wells in the nation, the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion’s new technology provides a venue for some of the fastest times and best diving in the country. In fact, the July 2007 issue of Aquatics International magazine stated this about McCorkle:
“a state-of-the-art competition pool loaded with the latest technology sets a university apart from the competition.”
Dedicated October 14, 2005, the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion is the newest addition to Ohio State’s top-notch athletic facilities. The Pavilion consists of the Mike Peppe Natatorium and the Ron O’Brien Diving Well. Holding nearly 1.56 million gallons of water in the entire facility, the Pavilion is part of Ohio State’s new Recreation and Physical Activity Center (RPAC). The McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion has already has hosted numerous championship competitions and is scheduled to host more. Here’s the championship slate to date:
