Women’s Swimming and Diving: Ohio State Finishes Eighth at Big Ten Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team finished in eighth place at the 2008 Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships, which concluded Saturday at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The University of Minnesota earned the title with a total of 660.5 points.
Highlighting the events Saturday was the performance of freshman Kristen Asman on the platform. After a solid showing in the preliminaries, Asman scored 288.15 points to earn a second-place finish for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State opened the swimming finals with an 11th-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle by Katelyn Brix. The freshman recorded an NCAA “B” cut time and a career-best time of 16:44.67 in the event. Also scoring points for the Buckeyes was sophomore Haley Mitchell, who earned a 16th-place finish in the event. Her time of 16:51.79 was both an NCAA “B” cut time and a career-best.
Sophomore Jill Lockhart captured a 15th-place finish and an NCAA “B” cut in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:00.50, which was also a season-best. Senior captain Annie Rennebohm recorded a career-best time of 51.05 in the 100 freestyle to finish 19th for the Buckeyes.
The Scarlet and Gray had two swimmers participate in the bonus final of the 200 breaststroke. Sophomore Colleen Schweitzer swam an NCAA “B” time of 2:18.03, while classmate Megan Alexander finished in a time of 2:19.05.
Anita Beck scored points for the Buckeyes in the 200 butterfly. The freshman recorded an NCAA “B” cut and a career-best time of 2:02.11 to capture a 14th-place finish.
The quartet of senior captain Linda Lund-Kristiansen, Beck, freshman Maggie O’Brien and Rennebohm closed out the meet with a ninth-place finish in a “B” cut time of 3:24.28 in the 400 freestyle relay.
Earning second team All-Big Ten for Ohio State were divers Kristen Asman and Bianca Alvarez for their performances during the three-day meet.
The divers will compete at the NCAA Diving Zones, March 14-16, at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Qualified swimmers and divers will advance to the 2008 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships meet held in Columbus at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, March 20-22.
