Women’s Lacrosse Wins Opener – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State defeated American 14-3 this afternoon on OSU’s North Turf Field. It was the 2008 women’s lacrosse season opener for both teams.
The Buckeyes, ahead 9-2 at the half, took advantage of balanced scoring; seven OSU players, led by Amanda Shimp and Brittney Zerhusen (four goals each), had at least one goal. Senior Kristen Slahor led Ohio State’s scoring with a goal and four assists.
Ohio State outshot American 22-6; Buckeye goalie Kristen Gilwee was credited with four saves. Freshman Maghan Beaudrault led OSU with four draw controls. Shimp, a senior, was the leader in caused turnovers with three.
“This was a great way to start the season,” said Sue Stimmel, Ohio State head women’s lacrosse coach. “Everybody played well. We performed well on offense and defense and transitioned really well. I thought our freshmen really stepped up.
“American is a good team and they were extremely determined. They played very well in the second half. I saw some things I really liked from our squad and saw some things we need to improve. We need to work to be consistent but this was an excellent start.”
Ohio State continues its three-game homestand Tuesday, Feb. 19, with a 4 p.m. match against Duquesne at the North Turf Field.
