Hubbs and Keesey fall just short in semifinals to second-seeded doubles team
COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s tennis team finished the ITA Midwest Regional Championship at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing, Mich. Despite a strong showing from the team, no Buckeye earned a spot to the ITA national indoor championship.
The two Ohio State doubles teams in competition Sunday were knocked from the tournament by the top two seeded teams in the bracket. Sophomore Cami Hubbs and junior Christina Keesey won their first match of the day, defeating Selma Salkovic and Gia McKnight of DePaul, 8-4, to move on to the semifinals.
There they faced the No. 2-seeded Notre Dame tandem of Keley Tefft and Kristy Frilling, who are each ranked nationally in both singles and doubles. Hubbs and Keesey battled but came up short in the semis, falling 8-4, to come up short of the championship match.
The other Buckeye doubles team in play Sunday was Julie Blackmore and Kirsten Flower, who had already beaten one seeded opponent on their way to a showdown with the top-seeded doubles team of Lauren Lui and Georgia Rose of Northwestern. Lui and Rose showed why they were ranked as the No. 7 doubles team in the nation, winning 8-3 to end Flower and Blackmore’s run.
The ITA Midwest Regional Championship was the final event of the fall season for the Buckeyes. The spring season begins Jan. 24 at the Ohio State Varsity Tennis Center when the Scarlet and Gray take on Missouri.
