Columbus, Ohio – Ohio State University freshman Bianca Alvarez was named Tuesday as the Big Ten Conference’s co-Diver of the Week for her efforts Saturday in helping the Buckeyes extend their winning streak to five consecutive meets.
Alvarez, a freshman from Miami, Fla., and Miami Sunset High School, led the Buckeyes to a double dual meet victory over Michigan State (210.5-89.5) and Eastern Michigan (195-105) as she placed first in both diving events. Both of her dives qualified her for the NCAA Zone meet in March, with scores of 293.80 off the one-meter and 343.40 from the three-meter board. This is the freshman’s second-consecutive weekly honor from the Big Ten and the second of her career.
Last week Alvarez, who has won 10 times off the one- and three-meter springboards this season, set a new school and McCorkle Aquatic Center record with her 396.15-point performance off the three-meter board in a win over Wright State.
Ohio State divers, under the direction of coach Vince Panzano, have won six Big Ten weekly awards this season. Alvarez and junior Wes Wieser have each been honored twice. Junior Chelsea Davis, was honored as Diver of the Week Dec. 4 and freshman Sean Moore, whose father Tim was a four-time NCAA champion diver for the Buckeyes from 1973-75, was named Big Ten Diver of the Week Nov. 27 after he swept the diving competitions (one- and three-meter boards) against Cleveland State to garner his first and second collegiate wins.
