COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 20th-ranked Ohio State (4-1) women’s volleyball team open their home schedule Tuesday by hosting Youngstown State (5-2) at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena. Last week the Buckeyes split a pair of matches at the Coors Classic in Ft. Collins, Colo. OSU lost 3-0 (30-22, 30-25, 30-21) to host Colorado State Thursday and defeated Pacific, 3-0 (30-22, 30-21, 33-31) Friday.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
Head coach Jim Stone is in his 26th season with the 20th-ranked Buckeyes. Ohio State is 4-1 on the season after splitting matches at the Coors Classic in Ft. Collins, Colo. The Buckeyes fell to Colorado State, 3-0 (30-22, 30-25, 30-21) and defeated Pacific, 3-0 (30-22, 30-21, 33-31).
Danielle Meyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) leads the Buckeyes in points per game with a 5.87 average. Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) ranks second at 5.17 with Katie Dull (Fr., Solo, Ohio) third at 2.92. Meyer leads the team in kills per game at 4.53 with McCarthy second at 3.93 and Dull third at 2.54. Kristen Dozier (So., Sandy Spring, Md.) is the top percentage hitter on the squad with a .483 average. McCarthy ranks second at .387 and Meyer third at .302. At setter Betsy Hone (Fr., Celina, Ohio) has a 12.20 assists per game average. McCarthy has produced a team-high 11 ace serves with a .73 per game average. Kaila Calhoun (Fr., Elkhart, Ind.) is second with six aces (.40). Defensively, Ami Stevens (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio) has a team-high 3.60 digs per game average for the Buckeyes. Calhoun is second at 2.53 with Meyer ranked third at 2.20. At the net, Meyer leads the team in blocking with a 1.93 per game average with three solos and 26 assists. Hone ranks second at 1.00 per game with 15 assists while McCarthy is third at .80 with three solos and nine assists. Stevens has a .975 reception percentage to lead the squad with 122 reception attempts with three errors. As a team, Ohio State his averaging 21.07 points, 16.00 kills, 2.27 aces, 14.33 digs and 2.80 blocks per game. Buckeye opponents average 15.13 points, 11.73 kills, 1.07 aces, 13.33 digs and 2.33 blocks per game.
A LOOK AT YOUNGSTOWN STATE
Head coach Joe Bonner is in his third season for the Penguins. Youngstown State has a 5-2 overall record. Last week at the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational the Penguins defeated UNC-Greensboro 3-1 (30-22, 30-23, 25-30, 30-16) and lost 3-0 (30-19, 30-27, 30-14) to North Dakota State and 3-1 (30-25, 27-30, 31-29, 30-25) at Robert Morris.
Ruth Boscaljon is the team leader in points per game with a 3.76 average. Jessica Fraley is second at 3.54 and Abigail Drost is third at 3.07. Franley is the team leader in kills per game at 3.04 with Boscaljon second at 3.00 and Drost third at 2.37. Boscaljon is the top percentage hitter on the squad at .353. Fraley stands second at .259 with Karla Everhart third at .255. At setter, Everhart is averaging 8.59 assists per game for the Penguins. Drost has a team-high 14 ace serves with a .52 per game average. Ebony Barbosa is second in aces with five (.19). Defensively, Dana Leslie is the team leader in digs per game at 4.71. Drost ranks second at 3.96 with Barbosa third at 2.96. At the net, Boscaljon has a team-high 1.00 blocks per game with six solos and 21 assists. Allison Heinz ranks second at .86 with a solo and 18 assists with Fraley third at .74 with a solo and 19 assists. YSU opponents average 17.43 points per game. Penguin opponents average 13.56 kills, 1.78 aces, 18.44 digs and 2.09 blocks per game while hitting .143.
OHIO STATE – YOUNGSTOWN STATE SERIES
Ohio State leads the series with Youngstown State, 3-0. The first meeting came in Dayton at the OAISW Championship with a 2-0 (15-4, 15-0) victory. The Buckeyes won 3-0 (30-11, 30-25, 30-20) in a home match in 2004. The squads played last year, in Youngstown, with Ohio State winning 3-0 (30-18, 30-25, 30-25).
MEYER NOW TIED FOR 10TH IN OSU CAREER SOLO BLOCKS
With a solo block in each match last week, Danielle Meyer now has 45 and has moved into a tie for 10th on the Ohio State career list. She is tied with Holly O’Leary (1987-90). Next on the list, tied for eighth, are Suzie Stiling (1999-02) and Sherri Helman (1993-96) with 63 each.
MEYER NOT FIFTH IN OSU CARERE ASSIST BLOCKS
With four assist blocks at Colorado State and six against Pacific, Danielle Meyer now has 325 career assist blocks and has moved to fifth on the Ohio State career list. She passed Jenny Jackson (1992-95) with 322. Next on the list with 360 is Sherri Helman (1993-96) ranking fourth.
MEYER TOPS THE BIG TEN IN BLOCKS PER GAME
After two weeks of play, Danielle Meyer has a 1.93 blocks per game average and is the top blocker in the Big Ten Conference. She has three solos and 26 assists.
DOZIER LEADS THE BIG TEN IN HITTING PERCENTAGE
Kristen Dozier is hitting .483 on the season to lead the Big Ten Conference. In five matches she has 35 kills with seven errors on 58 attempts. Last week Dozier hit .333 (4-2-6) at Colorado State and .250 (5-2-12) against Pacific.
OHIO STATE RANKED 20TH IN THE CSTV/AVCA COACHES POLL
Ohio State is ranked 20th in the CSTV (College Sports Television/AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) 2007 Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll. The Buckeyes are one of five Big Ten squads ranked in the CSTV/AVCA Poll. Others include Penn State third, Wisconsin 10th, Minnesota 12th, and Michigan 14th.
MEYER A UNANIMOUS CHOICE FOR THE 2007 PRESEASON ALL-BIG TEN TEAM
Middle blocker Danielle Meyer was one of three unanimous selections to the 2007 Preseason All-Big Ten team. Meyer is a two-time American Volleyball Coaches Association third-team All-American and a two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection. This is the second time she has earned preseason honors. Penn State and Wisconsin each placed three players on the team while Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State and Purdue had one player each on the team.
Meyer, a 2006 ESPN The Magazine Second-Team Academic All-American, averaged 4.26 kills 1.96 digs and .85 blocks per game last season while hitting .301. She started all 32 matches in 2006, the first 22 at outside hitter and the last 10 at middle blocker.
OHIO STATE PICKED TO FINISH FOURTH IN THE BIG TEN PRESEASON POLL
The Buckeyes, by a vote of the Big Ten Conference coaches, Ohio State were tabbed to finish fourth in the league. Four-time defending Big Ten champion Penn State was picked to finish first with Wisconsin second and Minnesota third. Following Ohio State, Purdue was ranked fifth, Michigan sixth, Michigan State seventh, Illinois eighth, Northwestern ninth, Iowa 10th and Indiana 11th.
HEAD COACH JIM STONE
Jim Stone enters his 26th season at Ohio State. He has a 522-279 record with the Buckeyes and is 290-162 in Big Ten play. His squads have won Big Ten Championships in 1989, 1991 and 1994 and finished tied for second in 2004 being named the Big Ten Coach of the Year. He was the 1991 Volleyball Monthly National Coach of the Year and the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 1989, 1991, 1994 and 2004. Under Stone, Ohio State has participated in the NCAA championship in 15 of the last 18 years, advancing to the national semifinals in 1991 and 1994. Stone’s coaching career record includes three years at Wyoming (1979-1981). His 29-year career record is 572-321.
OHIO STATE WINS THE ACTIVE ANKLE CHALLENGE
The Buckeyes won three matches last weekend at the Active Ankle Challenge in Muncie, Ind. OSU opened play with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-22, 30-19) win over Southeast Missouri State Friday. Ball State, with a 3-2 (26-30, 30-23, 30-24, 25-30, 15-13) victory over Maine completed the first round. The Buckeyes started Saturday’s second round with a 3-0 (30-12, 30-19, 30-19) win over Maine. Southwest Missouri State defeated Ball State, 3-2 (30-22, 30-23, 23-30, 27-30, 15-13) to complete the second round. Southwest Missouri State started round three with a 3-0 (30-22, 30-24, 30-20) win over Maine. The Buckeyes won the Challenge with a 3-0 (30-21, 30-28, 30-23) victory over Ball State. Ohio State’s Danielle Meyer was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament with teammates Ami Stevens and Briana McCarthy selected to the All-Tournament Team. Also named to the team were Brenna Schlader and Molly Davis from Southeast Missouri State, Lindsay Allman from Maine and Alyssa Rio from Ball State.
