No. 25 Ohio State Suffers 1-0 Loss in Double-overtime at Wisconsin-Green Bay – Ohio State Buckeyes

Host Phoenix hold opponent scoreless for fourth-consecutive game
COLUMBUS, Ohio With 1:18 remaining in double-overtime, host Wisconsin-Green Bay freshman JC Banks headed in the game-winning goal to beat the 25th-ranked Ohio State men’s soccer team, 1-0, Saturday night at Aldo Santaga Stadium. The loss drops the Buckeyes to 5-3-2 overall this season, while the Phoenix improves to 6-2-2.
The Phoenix has held its last four opponents without a goal and is now 4-0-1 at home this season. The match was Ohio State’s seventh on the road in its last eight contests and second-consecutive double-overtime match after playing to a 1-1 tie at Akron Wednesday.
“I thought we defended well tonight and from the run of play we mostly shut them down,” John Bluem, Ohio State head coach, said. “Green Bay is a very athletic team with great speed, so it was a difficult opponent from that sense. They were dangerous all night long with their throw-in, which they could use almost like a corner kick. So from their corner kicks and those long throw ins, we were under a lot of pressure.”
The Phoenix out-shot the Buckeyes 21-13, although the shots on-goal totals were four apiece. The goal by Banks was his team-leading fifth of the season.
“It’s a difficult pill to swallow, losing with 1:15 to go,” Bluem said. “I thought we deserved a tie. We just weren’t good enough in the attack. It was an even game, but it was choppy and didn’t have a flow. It was also difficult in it being our second game in a row that went into overtime. All the traveling is not easy, so we’re looking forward to getting back home for a few games.”
Ohio State senior goalkeeper Casey Latchem had three saves, all coming in the second half when UW-GB had 13 shots. Senior defender Eric Brunner led the Buckeyes with three shots.
Ohio State begins a three-game homestand at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when the Buckeyes host Cal State Bakersfield in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
