Women’s Volleyball drops 3-0 decision at Purdue – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (7-5 overall, 1-2 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (30-26, 30-26, 30-23) decision at Purdue (9-5, 2-1) Friday night in the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility. OhioState’s Danielle Meyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a team-high 14 points in the loss while Purdue’s Carrie Gurnell had a match-high 15. Meyer recorded a team-high 11 kills, adding a match-high six assist blocks and 11 digs in the contest. Gurnell posted 13 kills, a solo block and two assist blocks.
Tied at five in game one, Purdue scored the next five points to take a 10-5 lead. The Boilermakers held a 26-18 lead when OhioState scored four straight points to cut the lead to four at 26-22. The run began with kills from Katie Dull (Fr., Solon, Ohio) and Kristen Dozier (So., SandySpring, Md.), a Dozier-Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) block and a Betsy Hone (Fr., Celina, Ohio) ace serve. An OSU error and a Dozier kill moved to score to 27-23. Another Buckeye error and a McCarthy kill made it 28-24. Ohio State cut the lead to two at 28-26 with a Laura Kastein (Jr., Marysville, Ohio) ace serve and a Anna Szerszen (So., Conflans Ste Hne, France)-Meyer block. Purdue’s then scored two kills by Kristen Arthurs to win the game, 30-26. Purdue hit .122 for the game to .135 for OhioState.
Game two saw 10 lead changes and 15 ties, the last coming at 18-all. Purdue used a Samantha Mader kill, a Sam Gray ace serve and three OSU errors to take a 23-18 lead. At 26-21, kills from Stephanie Lynch and Gurnell and an OSU error set game point at 29-21. The Buckeyes used two Dull-Meyer blocks, a Szerszen ace serve and a Purdue error to stop four game points to make it 29-26. Purdue, with a Lynch kill closed out the game at 30-26 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Purdue hit .275 for the game to .132 for OhioState.
Game three saw 10 lead changes and 12 ties, the last coming at 16-all. Purdue broke the tie with three OhioState errors to go ahead, 19-16. OhioState trailed 24-20 when a McCarthy kill and a Purdue error cut the margin to two at 24-22. Three OSU errors and a Lynch kill expanded the Boilermaker lead to six at 28-22. A Meyer kill cut the lead to five at 28-23. A Lynch kill set match-point for Purdue at 29-23. The Boilermakers closed out the game with a Lynch-Gurnell block at 30-23 to sweep the match, 3-0. Purdue hit .256 for the match to .146 for OhioState.
Purdue hit .212 for the match to .138 for OhioState. The Boilermakers had a 50 to 41 margin in kills while OhioState had a five to four edge in ace serves. OhioState’s Hone and Kastein and Purdue’s Lynch each recorded two aces in the match. The Buckeyes gave up eight service error to six for Purdue. Defensively, OhioState had a 46-43 margin in digs with Purdue’s Kelli Miller recording a match-high 17. The Buckeyes had a nine to seven edge in team blocks in the match. OSU’s Meyer recorded a match-high six assist blocks. OSU setter Hone had 32 assists in the match while Gray had 23 and Jaclyn Hart had 14 for Purdue.
Ohio State continues on the road Saturday when they play at Indiana (10-5, 1-2) at 7 p.m. Ohio State then returns to St. John Arena for home matches against 12th-ranked Minnesota and Iowa. The Minnesota match will be telecast live by the Big Ten Network will start at 6 p.m. Friday and the Iowa match is 7 p.m. Saturday.
