13th Ranked Women’s Volleyball falls at Colorado State, 3-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 13th-ranked Ohio State (3-1) women’s volleyball team lost a 3-0 (30-22, 30-25, 30-21) decision at Colorado State (1-3) in the first round of the Coors Classic Thursday night in Moby Arena. OSU’s Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) scored a team-high 14.5 points in the match with Danielle Meyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) adding 14. Both players had 11 kills in the match with McCarthy adding two ace serves and two assist blocks and Meyer, a solo block and four assists. Ram Mekana Barnes had a match-high 19.5 points with Jaime Strauss adding 16. Each player had 12 kills with Barnes adding three ace serves, a solo block and seven assists and Strauss, an ace serve, two solos blocks and two assists.
Colorado State jumped to a 9-3 advantage early over the Buckeyes in game one. The Rams allowed Ohio State to get within two at 12-10 but then went on an 18-12 run to finish out the game, 30-22. CSU hit .324 and held the Buckeyes to .171 hitting.
Game two began with the Buckeyes trailing by six at 12-6, before tying the game at 20 with a Kaila Calhoun (Fr., Elkhart, Ind.) ace serve. Ohio State took a 21-20 lead with a Meyer-Anna Szerszen (So., Conflans Ste Hne, France) block. The Rams scored the next five points to open 25-21 lead. Colorado State scored the final three points to win the game, 30-25, and take a 2-0 lead in the match. Colorado State hit .200 for the game to .057 for the Buckeyes.
With game three tied at 12, a Strauss kill and two ace serves by Barnes gave Colorado State a 15-12 lead. The Rams expanded the lead to win the game, 30-21, and take the match, 3-0. Colorado State hit .229 for the game to .075 for Ohio State.
For the match, the Rams hit .250 to Ohio State’s .103. CSU had a 46-40 margin in kills and a six to three advantage in ace serves. Barnes posted a match-high three aces for Colorado State. Defensively, CSU had a 38-31 edge in digs with Katelin Batten posting a match-high 16 for the Rams. At the net, Colorado State had a 17 to eight advantage in team blocks. CSU’s Barnes recorded a match-high eight blocks with a solo and seven assists. Ram setter Ashley Fornstrom posted a match-high 42 assists while OSU’s Betsy Hone (Fr., Celina, Ohio) had 36 in the match.
Ohio State continues play in the Coors Classic Friday at 3 p.m. (MT) when the Buckeyes face Pacific (1-0) in Moby Arena.
