16th Ranked Women’s Volleyball Defeats Southeast Missouri State, 3-0 to open the season – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 16th-ranked Ohio State (1-0) women’s volleyball team opened the 2007 season with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-22, 30-19) over Southeast Missouri State (0-1) in the opening match of the Ball State Active Ankle Challenge in Muncie, Ind. OSU’s Danielle Meyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a match-high 20.5 points with Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) adding 17 and Katie Dull (Fr., Solo, Ohio) 13.5. Meyer had a match-high 17 kills (.464), a solo block and five assist blocks. McCarthy had 15 kills (.560), an ace serve and two assist blocks and Dull added 12 kills (.280), a solo block and an assist block. Brenna Schlader posted 11.5 points for SEMO with seven kills, three ace serves and three assist blocks.
With game one tied at four, the Buckeyes went on a 7-1 run to open an 11-5 lead. The run began with a kill by Dull. Errors by both teams made it 6-5. OSU then scored five straight points starting with two kills each from Dull and Meyer. A Laura Kastein (Jr., Marysville, Ohio) ace serve made it 11-5. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to seven with kills from Dull and McCarthy. The Redhawks rallied with a 16-5 run to tie the game at 18. At 21-21, kills from Dull and McCarthy made it 23-21. Southeast Missouri State, with a kill from Aubrey Dondlinger cut the lead to one at 23-22. A Meyer kill and a Redhawk error made it 25-22. Ohio State held a 27-24 lead when a McCarthy ace serve and two Redhawk errors ended the game at 30-24. Ohio State hit .267 for the game to .103 for Southeast Missouri State.
Ohio State opened game two by scoring the first six points. A Dull kill opened the game. A Redhawk error and a Meyer kill made it 3-0. Kills from Dull and Meyer and a Carly Syms (Fr., Elyria, Ohio) ace serve took the lead to 6-0. At 6-2, kills from Meyer and McCarthy and two SEMO errors gave Ohio State a 10-2 lead. At 11-3, two McCarthy kills and a Kaila Calhoun (Fr., Elkhart, Ind.) solo block took the lead to 11 at 14-3. OSU took the lead to 12 at 18-6 with a Dull kill. The Redhawks responded with five straight points to cut the lead to seven at 18-11. At 24-18, Buckeye kills by McCarthy and Meyer, a Redhawk error and a Kristen Dozier (So., Sandy Spring, Md.) kill made it 28-18. A Brenna Schlader kill stopped the run at 28-19. Two Buckeye errors made it 28-21. A Dozier kill set game point at 29-21. A Buckeye error stopped the first game point but a SEMO error ended the game at 30-22 for Ohio State. The Buckeyes hit 282 for the game to .118 for the Redhawks.
An OSU kill by Meyer and a Meyer-Betsy Hone (Fr., Celina, Ohio) block opened game three for the Buckeyes. Southeast Missouri State tied the game at six and at seven-all a Dull kill and a Meyer solo block made it 9-7, OSU. Two McCarthy kills opened an 11-8 Ohio State lead. With the Buckeyes leading 15-13, a kills by Dozier, a Redhawk error and a Hone-Meyer block gave Ohio State an 18-13 lead. The Redhawks stopped the run with a Brittany Hastings kill at 18-14. OSU then scored the next five points with four coming from Redhawk errors and a Buckeye triple block by Meyer, McCarthy and Hone to open a 23-14 lead. At 27-19, a Dull kill and two Redhawk errors closed out the game at 30-19 to give Ohio State a 3-0 victory in the match. The Buckeyes hit .536 for the game to .027 for Southeast Missouri State.
For the match, Ohio State hit .339 to .082 for Southeast Missouri State. The Buckeyes had a 56-29 margin in kills while the Redhawks had five ace serves to four for the Buckeyes. Ohio State had a 50 to 30 advantage in digs in the match. OSU’s Meyer posted 13 digs with libero Ami Stevens (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio) adding 10. The Buckeyes had a 7.5 to three advantage in blocks with Meyer posting a match-high six blocks with a solo and five assists. OSU’s Hone had 51 assists in the match to 14 for Sarah Barth for the Redhawks.
In the second match Friday, host Ball State (1-0) defeated Maine (0-1), 3-2 (26-30, 30-23, 30-24, 25-30, 15-13). Ohio State returns to action at 10 a.m. Saturday when they face Maine in the second round of the Challenge. The Buckeyes will close out play at 7:30 p.m. when they face host Ball State.
