– The softball team is the eighth Ohio State team to win its conference championship this season, joining the football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, field hockey and men’s tennis teams, which all won Big Ten titles, and the fencing (Midwest Fencing Conference) and men’s volleyball (Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association), which also won their leagues, respectively.
– The crowd of 695 at Buckeye Field Sunday is a new attendance record for Buckeye Field. The previous high of 682 watched Ohio State beat Michigan by the same score, 4-0, on April 19, 2003.
– Ohio State set two team records Sunday. In addition to wrapping up its first-ever undefeated regular season at home (see recap), the Buckeyes scored a run in its program-record 29th-consecutive game, besting the previous school record for consecutive games without getting shut out of 28, set last year.
– The Buckeyes are now 29-5 this season when they score first.
– Ohio State has won 21 of its last 25 games.
– Buckeyes in the circle: In the last three weeks, senior Jamee Juarez has gone 9-0 with 87 strikeouts, only four walks and 0.40 earned run average (three earned runs in 53.0 innings).
– Buckeyes at the plate: Sam Marder’s RBI single in the seventh inning was her team-leading 46th run batted in of the season, which is already an OSU freshman record and third-most in a season in program history.
– After seeing her nine-game hitting streak snapped Saturday, junior Brittany Vanderink went 3-for-4 Sunday. In her last 11 games, Vanderink is batting .444 (16-36).
– In her last 17 games, sophomore Courtney Pruner is batting .511 (23-45). She went 1-for-1 Sunday and was walked her first three times up.
– Weather: Sunny and 61 degrees at first pitch. Wind 5-10 MPH right to left, slightly in from right.
– Ohio State is now 37-25 all-time against Penn State, including 15-4 against the Nittany Lions at Buckeye Field. Of note, 13 of the last 15 games in the series have been decided by three runs or fewer.
– Penn State has 14 letterwinners back from its 2006 team that went 39-17 overall and 10-10 in the Big Ten and made its sixth trip to the NCAA tournament in the last seven years.
