COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 19th-ranked Ohio State (9-7, 1-3 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team fell, 9-7, to 18th-ranked Penn State (9-7, 0-4) Thursday afternoon in the opening game of the ALC Conference Tournament at Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University. The Nittany Lions scored the final three goals to overcome a 7-6 Buckeye lead. Penn State’s Karen Long scored three goals and Kim Kontson had two for the Nittany Lions while Amanda Shimp (Jr., Endicott, N.Y.) posted three goals for the Buckeyes.
Penn State opened the score in the game with a goal by Lindsay Dutch at 28:58. The Buckeyes tied the game at one with a Natale Miller (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) goal at 28:49. The Nittany Lions took a 2-1 lead when the Buckeyes could not control the ball and it resulted in an own goal at 22:50 to give Penn State a 2-1 lead. Kerri Yourick’s (So., Castle Rock, Colo.) goal at 14:03 on a Kristen Slahor (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) assist tied the game at 14:03 at two each. Penn State regained the lead at 12:49 with a Karen Long goal, assisted by Dutch. OSU responded with a Kelly Haggerty (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) goal at 12:02 to tie the game at three. The Buckeyes took a 4-3 lead with a Shimp goal at 8:59. At 5:54, Penn State tied the game at four with a Kim Kontson goal. Ohio State regained the lead at 5-4 with a Jessica Patane (Jr., Farmingdale, N.Y.) goal, assisted by Yourick, at 1:40 to end the scoring for the half.
The second half opened with Penn State tying the game at five with a Karen Long goal at 29:24, assisted by Kontson. The Nittany Lions took a 6-5 lead at 17:51 with a Kerry Shea goal. Shimp’s second goal at 16:24 tied the game at 6-6. Her third goal at 15:02 gave Ohio State a 7-6 lead. Penn State’s Laura Lincicome tied the game at seven at 11:18 of a Lindsay Dutch assist. The Nittany Lions took an 8-7 lead at 10:32 with a Karen Long goal, assisted by Kontson. The Nittany Lions added to the lead, 9-7, with a Kontson goal, assisted by Theresa Bucci at 3:08 to end the scoring for the half giving Penn State the victory.
In goal OSU’s Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.)took the loss while making eight saves and giving up nine goals. Penn State’s Cammie Jurkowsky had six saves in the victory while giving up seven goals.
