Buckeyes Compete in Day One of 2007 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in first-day action at the 2007 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships Friday in Columbia, Mo. The men’s team stands in 23rd place after day one with one team point.
David Ebersole, a junior from Westlake, Ohio, accounted for the men’s team point with an eighth-place finish in the hammer at a career-best distance of 198 feet, 10 inches. He hit 198-3 last week to place fourth at the Big Ten championships. Fellow Buckeye Lenny Jatsek took 17th in the Mideast hammer at 189-0.
On the track for the men, John Ealy, a junior, was 17th in the 5,000-meter run (14:32.80) and Joe Gourley completed his Ohio State career with an 18th-place time in the 800 meters (1:49.71). Also in the distance events, freshman Chad Balyo clocked 3:56.25 in the 1,500-meter prelims, but missed the final after taking 20th place.Ohio State sophomore Elon Simms and Matt Comer, who both have earned All-Big Ten status in the 400-meter hurdles, competed in the event prelims Friday. Both Buckeyes missed the final as Simms placed 25th (55.03) and Comer failed to finish the race.
For the women, Ayrizanna Favours was scratched in both the 200- and 400-meter races. Senior Jessica Stringer was unable to record a height in the high jump, while junior Veronica Jatsek also scratched in the shot put. Jatsek will vie for a spot at the 2007 NCAA Championships Saturday in the hammer at 1 p.m. EDT.
