COLUMBUS, Ohio – Members of the men’s and women’s Ohio State swimming team competed for the Ohio State Swim Club at the Eric Namesnik Memorial Grand Prix in Ann Arbor, Mich., last weekend. The four-day meet followed the 2008 Olympics format, which reverses the traditional prelims-finals design. Rather than contest the finals in the evening, they were swum during the morning.
Swimming against 16-time world champion Michael Phelps, former Buckeye Joe Doyle (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg), who just completed his senior season, turned ahead of Phelps at the 50-meter mark in both the preliminary and final sessions of the 100-meter butterfly. Despite falling slightly behind, Doyle secured third placed in a time of 55.27. Later in the meet, Doyle earned the runner-up position in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 52.01.
Teammate Matthias Sigrist (Soph., Schaffhausen, Switzerland/Schaffhausen) also qualified to compete in the 100-meter butterfly finals when he posted the sixth-fastest time of 56.97. During the finals session, he fell to eighth place when he turned in a time of 57.91. Sigrist then swam in the very next race – the 200-meter freestyle – where he finished 23rd in a time of 1:57.87. On the final day of competition, Sigrist garnered a 10th-place finish in a time of 2:06.31.
Griet Buelens (Jr., Kapelle-Op-Den-Bos, Belgium/Ursuline Academy) competed in the 100-meter butterfly on the women’s side. She advanced to the bonus finals as the 17th-place seed with a time of 1:05.68. During the finals competition she swam the race in 1:07.40 to place 24th. Buelens also qualified for the consolation finals in the 200-meter distance with a time of 2:21.78. She posted a final time of 2:23.92 for 16th-place. Other swimmers who competed at the meet included Stefan Sigrist (Fr., Schaffhausen, Switzerland/Schaffhausen), Annie Rennenbom (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), Colleen Schweitzer (Fr., Highlands Park, Colo./Highlands Ranch), Haley Mitchell (Fr., Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Western), Linda Lund (Jr., Roennede, Denmark/Haslev) and Meg Noble (Fr., Novi, Mich./Merci).
