Ohio State Women’s Swimming Announces Season Awards – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team held its annual banquet Saturday, April 28, to honor the student-athletes for their efforts during the 2006-07 season. Six Buckeyes received awards for their outstanding performances.
Freshman Jill Lockhart (Fr., Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) was named Rookie of the Year after posting eight first-place individual finishes during the dual-meet season. She also qualified for an NCAA consideration time with a 15th-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke at the Big Ten championships. In addition to her individual accomplishments, Lockhart aided teammates in three relay events at the conference meet.
Haley Mitchell (Fr., Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Western) was awarded the Most Improved Swimmer honor. Mitchell improved her times in every single event this year, including shaving 10 seconds from her 500-yard freestyle to qualify for an NCAA `B’ standard. She also swam on the 800-yard freestyle relay at the Big Ten meet and recorded the team’s second-fastest times in the 200-, 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle events.
Annie Rennebohm (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) was voted Most Inspirational by her teammates. The English major recorded the team’s fastest time of 51.74 in the 100-yard freestyle to place 21st at the Big Ten competition. She also swam on the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays at the meet. Rennebohm was also awarded the Jim and Bev Montrella honor for earning the highest GPA of the junior class.
The most valuable swimmer of the year accolade was given to Griet Buelens (Jr., Kapelle-Op-Den-Bos, Belgium/Ursuline Academy). Buelens won the only medal for the Buckeyes at the Big Ten championships in the 200-yard butterfly when she swam the team’s fastest season time of 1:59.20. She also owned the team’s fastest season times in the 200-, 500-, 1000- and 1650-yard freestyle, as well as the 100-yard butterfly. Buelens participated on four relays at the Big Ten championships and was one of two Buckeye swimmers to compete at the NCAA championships. Senior Julie Broms (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) earned the most valuable diver honor, as she was the sole Ohio State representative on the boards at the NCAA championships. Broms finished fourth and fifth on the 1- and 3-meter, respectively, at the Big Ten championships. She garnered four first-places finishes in dual-meet competition, never finishing below third place on the 3-meter throughout the season.
Courtney Brayman (So., Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) received the final award. She received the Susie Atwood honor for maintaining the highest GPA of the sophomore class. Brayman was also a significant contributor in relay and butterfly events throughout the season.
