COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the fourth-consecutive year, the Jesse Owens Classic will showcase hundreds of Ohio’s top high school student-athletes May 5 in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. After welcoming 300 boys and girls in the 2005 Classic, the number has increased to more than 400 this year.
“The high school event of the Jesse Owens Classic continues to grow each year,” Robert Gary, Ohio State men’s head coach and Jesse Owens meet director, said. “The Classic historically has been one of the finest meets in the Midwest and the inclusion of Ohio high school teams has helped this meet continue to prosper. We envision the Classic as one of the premier high school events in the state.”
The last four editions of the Jesse Owens Track Classic featured deep and talented high school fields. After welcoming more than 150 Ohio scholastic boy’s and girl’s teams the last two years, a combined total of 73 boy’s and girl’s squads entered in 2007.
Columbus-area schools will match up against squads from all regions of the state during the morning and early afternoon Saturday. The high school portion of the meet schedule begins at 10 a.m. Saturday with four field events and the girl’s 100-meter hurdles. The high school 100-meter dash follows shortly and the 4x400m relay closes out the track action. The Columbus Parks and Recreation Department again will sponsor youth races at 2:15 p.m., before the college and post-collegiate events get into full swing at 3:30 p.m. Information for the 2007 Jesse Owens Track Classic can be accessed at www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com.
