COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 17th-ranked Ohio State (9-6, 1-3 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team dropped a 21-5 decision at top-ranked Northwestern (14-1, 4-0) Friday afternoon at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex. Ohio State’s Kristen Slahor (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) and Rachael Cornicello (Fr., Lynbrook, N.Y.) scored two goal each with Jessica Patane (Jr., Farmingdale, N.Y.) adding one for the Buckeyes. Northwestern’s Kristen Kjellman, Aly Josephs and Casey Donohoe scored four goals each for the Wildcats.
Northwestern opened the scoring with a Donohoe goal at 28:36. Patane tied the game at one at 27:10. The Wildcats then scored 10 consecutive goals to take a 11-1 lead. The run began with goals by Hilary Bowen (27:00), Donohoe (24:42) and Josephs (18:57) to make it 4-1. Goals by Kjellman (17:42), Josephs (16:15) and Donohoe (14:14) expanded the lead to 7-1. An eight-meter goal by Josephs (13:20), a goal by Meredith Frank (13:01) and two Kjellman goals took the lead to 11-1. A Cornicello goal at 5:23 stopped the scoring run to make it 11-2. Goals by Donohoe (4:29) and Bowen (1:52) took the lead to 13-2. A second Cornicello goal at 1:32 closed out the half at 13-3, Northwestern.
The Wildcats opened the second half with seven straight goals to take a 20-3 lead. The run began with goals by Josephs (24:06) and Bowen (22:53). A Hannah Nielsen goal made it 16-3 at 18:01. Goals by Frank (16:39), Kjellman (14:32), Lindsay North (12:08) and Danielle Spencer (8:34) completed the run. OSU’s Slahor scored back-to-back goals at 5:24 and 1:11 to make it 20-5. Northwestern closed out the scoring in the game at 0:08 with a Maggie Bremer goal to make the final score, 21-5.
In goal, Ohio State’s Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) took the loss playing the first half making five saves and giving up 13 goals. Joy DeMarco (Sr., Hudson, Ohio) played the second half making three saves and giving up eight goals. Northwestern’s Morgan Lathrop played 37:15 for the win while making two saves and giving up three goals. Wildcat Abby Bangser played the final 22:45 of the game and had three saves and gave up two goals.
Ohio State will play in the ALC Tournament next week, hosted by Johns Hopkins.
