COLUMBUS, Ohio – Members of the Ohio State diving team competed at the Speedo USA Spring Nationals held in the Germantown Indoor Swim Center in Boyds, Md., April 18-22.
Former Buckeye Mitch Richeson, who trains at Ohio State under head coach Vince Panzano, posted a second-place finish on the men’s synchronized 3-meter with partner Troy Dumais. The pair qualified the USA Diving Team for a spot at the 2008 Olympics last month at the World Championships in Melbourne, Australia, when they finished fourth in the event.
Richeson also competed as an individual on the 3-meter, along with former teammates Kellen Harkness (Sr., Puyallup, Wash./Cascade Christian) and Burkley Showe (Fr., Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington). Richeson recorded a score of 343.50 to finish 12th, while Harkness and Showe finished 17th and 23rd, respectively.
Showe and Harkness also competed on the 1-meter board, each advancing to the finals in the event. Showe was the runner-up heading into the finals, but fell to seventh with 356.85 despite scoring higher in the finals than he did in prelims. Harkness also improved his score but moved from fourth to ninth place (342.80) in the final round.
Wes Wieser (So., Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) was the sole Buckeye to represent Ohio State on the 10-meter platform – an event he won at the 2006 Big Ten Championships. He earned 13th place with a total of 321.15 points.
Incoming Ohio State freshmen Bianca Alvarez and Kristen Asman also competed at the five-day meet. Alvarez recorded a ninth-place finish on the 1-meter (242.95), as well as sixth on the women’s synchronized 3-meter (255.48) with partner Summer Mitchell. Competing in the meet for the first time, Asman qualified for the finals on the 3-meter. She filled 10th place with a score of 257.75.
