Women’s Lacrosse Upsets No. 8 Penn State on a last second goal by Jessica Patane – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (8-5, 1-2 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team needed a last second goal by Jessica Patane (Jr., Farmingdale, N.Y.) to upset eighth-ranked Penn State (8-6, 0-3) Friday night at Jeffrey Field. Patane scored four goals in the game for the Buckeyes with Amanda Shimp (Jr., Endicott, N.Y) and Natale Miller (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) adding two each. Penn State’s Kerry Shea, Lindsay Dutch and Linsey Shea scored two goals each for the Nittany Lions.
Penn State opened the scoring with a Kerry Shea goal at 27:07. The Nittany Lions took a 2-0 lead with a Marisa Lozano goal at 24:52, assisted by Mary LeNoir. Shimp put the Buckeyes on the scoreboard with an eight-meter goal at 23:43. Linsey Shea made it 3-1 for Penn State at 19:31 on an assist from Kerry Shea. A Maria Valderas eight-meter goal at 14:26 gave the Nittany Lions a 4-1 lead. The Buckeyes scored the next three goals to tie the game at four. A Kristen Slahor (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) goal at 10:10 started the run. Miller posted back-to-back goals at 8:18 and 1:40 to tie the game at four. Penn State regained the lead at 5-4 with a Linsey Shea goal, assisted by Lindsay Dutch, at 1:01 to end the scoring for the half.
A Shimp goal at 29:08 tied the game at five. A Patane goal at 27:29, with a Slahor assist, gave Ohio State their first lead of the game at 6-5. Patane scored again at 24:49 to give Ohio State a 7-5 lead. Penn State cut the lead to 7-6 with a Kerry Shea goal at 21:24. Patane’s third goal of the game, assist by Slahor, at 10:48 made it 8-6. At 6:07, Lindsay Dutch scored to cut the lead to one at 8-7. A second Dutch goal, assisted by Mariel Bryan, at 4:24 tied the game at eight. The Nittany Lions controlled the draw and had two shots before a Laura Burke (Fr., Columbus, Ohio) ground ball gave Ohio State possession. A Shimp shot with three seconds left was saved by Penn State goal Cammie Jurkowsky but Patane recovered the ball and scored the winning goal with one second left in the game for a 9-8 Buckeye victory.
Ohio State goalie Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) took the win in the contest making eight saves while giving up eight goals. Penn State’s Jurkowsky had six saves in the loss, giving up nine goals.
Ohio State continues the road trip when the Buckeyes face Bucknell Sunday at 1 p.m.
