COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (7-5 overall, 0-2 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse squad continues conference play when they travel to No. 8 Penn State Nittany Lions (8-5, 0-2) Friday at 7 p.m. The Buckeyes continue the road trip with a non-conference game at Bucknell Bison (5-8) Sunday at 1 p.m. Last week Ohio State, in home games, defeated UC-Davis, 17-4, and lost 10-9 to No. 15 Vanderbilt.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The head coach for the Buckeyes is Sue Stimmel. Ohio State is 7-5 on the season and 0-2 in the American Lacrosse Conference. Last week Ohio State, in home games, defeated UC-Davis, 17-4, and lost 10-9 to No. 15 Vanderbilt. Kristen Slahor (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) has a team-high 59 points on the season with 25 goals and a team-high 34 assists. Jessica Patane (Jr., Farmingdale, N.Y.) ranks second with 31 points with a team-high 29 goals and two assists. Kelly Haggerty (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) ranks third with 28 points with 25 goals and three assists. Bethany Carey (Jr., Eldersburg, Md.) leads the team in ground balls with 35. Danielle Gibson (Sr., Springfield, Pa.) and Laura Burke (Fr., Columbus, Ohio) are tied for second with 22. In draw controls, Haggerty has a co-team-high 23 with Amanda Shimp (Jr., Endicott, N.Y.). Natale Miller (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) is third with 15 with Kendall Gysin (So., Noblesville, Ind.) fourth with 12. Carey has a team-high 23 caused turnovers with Gibson second with 21 and Burke, third with 11. In goal, Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) has 12 starts on the season and a 6-4 record. She has an 11.45 goals against average and a .527 save percentage. Joy DeMarco (Sr., Hudson, Ohio) has played in seven games and has a 1-1 record. She has an 8.44 goals against average and a .525 save percentage.
A LOOK AT PENN STATE
The head coach for the eighth-ranked Nittany Lions is Suzanne Isidor. Penn State has an 8-5 overall record and is 0-2 in the ALC. Last week the Nittany Lions lost at No. 1 Northwestern, 19-8. Jessi Lieb leads Penn State in points with 39. She has a team-high 26 goals and 13 assists. Lindsay Dutch has 34 points, ranking second with 20 goals and a team-high 14 assists. Kerry Shea is third in points with 29 with 22 goals and seven assists. Lieb has a team-high 32 ground balls with goalie Cammie Jurkowski second with 29 and Shea third with 25. Dutch leads the team in draw controls with 32. Shea ranks second with 18 and Renee Cipro is third with 17. In caused turnovers, Lieb leads the team with 19. Shea and Cipro are tied for second 11 each. In goal, Jurkowsky has started all 13 games and has an 8-5 record. She has a .485 save percentage and a 9.00 goals against average.
OHIO STATE – PENN STATE SERIES
Penn State leads the series with Ohio State, 8-2. At University Park, the Nittany Lions are 4-1 against the Buckeyes. Penn State has won the last three meetings with Ohio State. Ohio State’s last win against the Nittany Lions was in 2003, a 10-9 victory at University Park.
A LOOK AT BUCKNELL
The head coach for the Bison is Jess Spadafora. Bucknell has a 5-8 overall record. Last week they defeated Wagner, 19-12, at home and lost, 17-6, at American. The Bison host Saint Francis (Pa.) Wednesday and Lafayette Saturday before playing the Buckeyes Sunday. Bonnie Buechel has a team-high 39 points with a team-high 30 goals and nine assists. Carol Donohue is second in points with 33 with 20 goals and 13 assists. Sarah Collins ranks third with 28 points on 13 goals and a team-high 15 assists. Goalie Katie Hartsock leads the team in ground balls with 30. Buechel and Lauren Deitrich are tied for second with 27 each. In draw controls, Buechel has a team high 36. Deitrich ranks second with 29 and Chelsea Peters is third with 21. Deitrich has a team-high 32 caused turnovers and Lauren Kremer second with 18 and Alex Radebaugh third with 16. In goal, Hartsock has a 4-6 record, playing in 13 games with 12 starts. She has a .477 save percentage and a 12.48 goals against average.
OHIO STATE – BUCKNELL SERIES
Ohio State has a 2-0 lead in the series with Bucknell. The Buckeyes won the first meeting, in 1999, with the Bison, 12-3, in Lewisburg. Ohio State won, 17-0, in 2000 in Columbus.
SLAHOR BECOMES THE OHIO STATE CAREER LEADER IN ASSISTS
Kristen Slahor tied the Ohio State game record for assists with eight against UC-Davis breaking the Buckeye career mark. Her 66 career assists past the previous leader, Tracey Bounds (2000-03) with 62. Slahor added an assist against Vanderbilt and now has 67. Her eight assists against UC Davis tied Mara Simpson for the game record set in 1996 against Earlham. She added a season-high three ground balls against UC Davis. On the season, Slahor has team-highs of 59 points and 34 assists and has 25 goals. Her 10 points for the week gives her 114 (47 goals, 67 assists) for her career and has moved her to eighth on the Ohio State career points list.
PATANE TIES OHIO STATE GAME RECORD FOR GOALS WITH SIX
Jessica Patane scored six goals against UC Davis to tie the Ohio State record for goals in a game. She is tied with nine others. Patane added an assist in the contest along with a draw control and a caused turnover. She scored a goal against Vanderbilt and added a ground ball, a draw control and a caused turnover. Patane is second on the team in points with 31 with a team-high 29 goals and two assists. Her seven goals on the week raises her career total to 53 and moves her to 12th on the Ohio State career goals list. She ranks 15th in points with 61 with 53 goals and eight assists.
SHIMP HAS THREE GOAL AGAINST VANDERBILT
Amanda Shimp scored a team-high three goals against Vanderbilt. She added two ground balls, equaled her career high of four draw controls and collected a caused turnover. Shimp had two ground balls and a caused turnover against UC Davis. She has 17 goals and an assist on the season. She is tied for the team lead in draw controls with 23, is fourth in ground balls with 19 and fourth in caused turnovers with nine.
MILLER MOVES TO SIXTH IN OHIO STATE CAREER DRAW CONTROLS
Natale Miller recorded three draw controls against UC-Davis and one against Vanderbilt to give her 56 for her career. She has moved to sixth on the Ohio State career draw control list passing Shannon Wilson (2000-03) with 53. Assistant coach Megan Mirick (1999-02) ranks fourth on the list with 64.
BURKE COLLECTS HER FIRST COLLEGIATE GOAL
Laura Burke (Fr., Columbus, Ohio) scored her first collegiate goal against UC Davis last week. She has 22 ground balls on the season, tying for second on the team and is third on the squad in caused turnovers with 11. Burke has six draw controls on the season.
HAGGERTY GOAL AND POINTS STREAKS END AGAINST VANDERBILT
Kelly Haggerty scored four goals against UC Davis but was held scoreless against Vanderbilt to stop her streak of 11 games of goals and points. The UC Davis game marked the third time she has scored four goals in a game. She scored one of her goals on an eight-meter attempt and added two draw controls. Haggerty posted a ground ball, a draw control and a caused turnover in the Vanderbilt game. She has 28 points on the season with 25 goals and three assists. Haggerty, for the season, is tied for the team lead in draw controls with 23.
YOURICK HAS BACK-TO-BACK TWO-GOAL GAMES
Keri Yourick (So., Castle Rock, Colo.) scored two goals in each game last week. She had two goals against UC Davis and added two draw controls. Against Vanderbilt, she scored twice for her fifth two-goal game of her career. Yourick has 13 goals on the season with four assists for 17 points.
ZERHUSEN SCORES TWICE AGAINST UC DAVIS
Brittney Zerhusen (Fr., Sykesville, Md.) scored two goals in the UC Davis contest to give her three goals on the season. She also picked up a ground ball against the Aggies.
OHIO STATE IN THE NATIONAL STATISTICS
Ohio State has several players nationally ranked after last week’s games. Kristen Slahor ranks eighth in points per game at 4.92 per game and is fifth in assists at 2.83. Bethany Carey is tied for 17th in caused turnovers at 1.92 per game and is tied for 30th in ground balls at 2.92. Danielle Gibson is 26th in caused turnovers with a 1.75 average. Kristen Gilwee is 11th in save percentage at .527 and is 31st in goals against average at 10.45. In team statistics, the Buckeyes are tied for 30th in caused turnovers at 9.25 per game and 38th in ground balls at 18.17. Ohio State is tied for 26th in scoring defense at 10.25, is 32nd in scoring offense at 11.67 and is 30th in scoring margin at 1.42.
BUCKEYES NOW 5-1 IN OVERTIME GAMES
Ohio State, with the California win, is now 5-1 in overtime games. The Buckeyes defeated Davidson, 10-9, in 1999. In 2003, OSU won, 11-10, at Cornell and lost, in two overtimes, to Vanderbilt, 12-11. Ohio State won at Stanford, 10-9, in 2004. The Buckeyes won, 15-14, against St. Bonaventure (neutral site) and defeated California, 9-8, at home this season.
HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel
Sue Stimmel is in her 12th season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to OSU. Stimmel is 90-88 at Ohio State (12 years) and is 168-105 in her 18-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.
GILWEE SELECTED TO ALC PRESEASON TEAM
Ohio State women’s lacrosse Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) has been selected to the 2007 American Lacrosse Conference Preseason All-Conference Team by a vote of the league’s five head coaches. Gilwee played in 13 games as a freshman, starting 11. She had a 4-7 record averaging a 10.94 goals against average and a .526 saves percentage. She was named to the 2006 second team ALC All-Conference Team. Ohio State was picked to finished fifth in the Conference by a vote of the coaches. Two-time defending NCAA champion Northwestern was picked to win their third ALC title in a row.

REVIEWING LAST WEEK
Ohio State 17, UC Davis 4
The Ohio State (7-4) women’s lacrosse team captured a 17-4 victory over UC-Davis (6-7) Friday night in the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Buckeye Jessica Patane scored a game-high six goals and added an assist for seven points while Kristen Slahor had a goal and a game-high eight assists for nine points in the contest. Patane’s six goals tied the Ohio State game record with nine others while Slahor’s eight assists tied the Buckeye game record held by Mara Simpson in 1996 against Earlham. The eight assists by Slahor gives her 66 for her career and breaks the OSU career record of 62 held by Tracey Bounds (2000-03). Patrice Clark scored two goals and added an assist for UC-Davis.
Ohio State opened the game with a Keri Yourick goal, assisted by Slahor, off the opening draw at 29:50. Kelly Haggerty made it 2-0 at 27:58 with an eight-meter goal. A Patane goal at 24:55 made it 3-0, Ohio State. UC-Davis scored at 23:52 on a Molly Peterson goal assisted by Clark. Yourick scored her second goal at 18:38, assisted by Slahor. Patane then scored her second (13:50) and third (12:15) goals of the game, the latter assisted by Slahor to give Ohio State a 6-1 lead. Clarke cut the lead to 6-2 with a goal at 6:34. Patane ended the first half with a goal with four seconds left to give OSU a 7-2 lead.
Slahor opened the second half with a goal at 29:24 assisted by Patane. The Buckeyes took a 9-2 lead at 25:25 with a Haggerty goal, assisted by Slahor. UC-Davis made it 9-3 with a Megan O’Connor goal at 23:19. Patane scored her fifth goal of the game at 22:50 with a Slahor assist. Laura Burke, assisted by Bethany Carey made it 11-3 at 17:04. At 16:40, a Haggerty goal, assisted by Slahor, made it 12-3. Haggerty scored her fourth goal at 16:27 with an assist from Slahor. Patane recorded her sixth goal of the game at 15:49 to give Ohio State a 14-3 lead. A Brittney Zerhusen goal at 14:47 was assisted by Slahor’s eighth assist of the game. The Aggies scored at 13:45 with a Clark goal to cut the lead to 15-4. A Jacqueline Cook goal at 7:19, assisted by Rachael Cornicello and a second Zerhusen goal at 3:40, assisted by Margaret Prunte, closed out the scoring to give Ohio State a 17-4 victory.
In goal, Kristen Gilwee had the start and collected the win playing 42:56. She had six saves and gave up three goals. Joy DeMarco closed out the game for Ohio State playing 17:04. She had four saves and gave up one goal. Hilary Harkins took the loss in goal for UC-Davis making nine saves and giving up 17 goals.
Vanderbilt 10, Ohio State 9
The Ohio State (7-5, 0-2 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team had a late rally fall short in a 10-9 loss to 15th-ranked Vanderbilt (9-4, 3-1) Sunday afternoon in the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes trailed 10-7 before scoring two goals in the final three minutes, the last with 47 seconds left, but would get no closer. Ohio State’s Amanda Ship scored a team-high three goals for the Buckeyes while Margie Curran and Cara Giordano each recorded three goals for Vanderbilt.
Vanderbilt opened the first half with a goal by Giordano at 25:47. OSU’s Natale Miller tied the game at one on an eight-meter goal at 22:31. The Buckeyes took a 2-1 lead at 21:34 by Shimp on an eight-meter attempt. The Commodores responded with the next three goals starting at 18:39 by Sara Downing to tie the game at two. Giordano gave Vanderbilt a 3-2 lead at 12:08 and Kendall Thrift made it 4-2 with a goal at 9:49. Ohio State’s Keri Yourick cut the lead to one at 4-3 with a goal at 8:42 to end the scoring for the half.
The Commodores opened the second half with four straight goals to take the lead to 8-3. The run began with a Margie Curran goal at 28:36, assisted by Thrift. Giordano scored her third goal of the game at 28:17 to make the lead, 6-3. Curren, at 27:02, scored with a Thrift assist. Thrift then scored at 24:55 on a Sara Downing assist to complete the run. Shimp’s goal at 24:03 started a three-goal run by the Buckeyes. Jessica Patane made it 8-5 with a goal, assisted by Miller, at 21:29. Ohio State cut the lead to two at 8-6 with Yourick’s second goal at 21:08 with an assist from Kristen Slahor. Vanderbilt took the lead to three at 9-6 with Curran’s third goal at 18:56 on an eight meter attempt. A Lauren Sterner goal for the Buckeyes at 12:03, on an eight-meter attempt, cut the margin to 9-7. Vanderbilt took the lead to three at 10-7 with an Ashley Paschall goal at 11:10 on a Jennifer Tapscott assist. The Buckeyes cut the lead to two at 10-8 on a Bethany Carey goal at 2:26. The Commodores controlled the draw but a Vanderbilt turnover at 1:25 gave Ohio State the ball leading to a Shimp goal, her third, with 47 seconds left in the game. The draw was controlled by Vanderbilt but each squad had a turnover to allow the Commodores to run out the final 25 seconds of the game to win, 10-9.
Ohio State’s Kristen Gilwee took the loss in goal for the Buckeyes making 17 saves and giving up 10 goals. Vanderbilt’s Brooke Shinaberry had five saves in the victory while giving up nine goals.
