Women’s Tennis Wins Big Ten Match at Purdue, 5-2 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team won three three-set matches en route to a 5-2 victory over Purdue Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind. The Buckeyes dropped the doubles point but rebounded to win 5-of-6 singles matches, including Sonia Ruzimovsky’s three-set victory at No. 4 that clinched the win. The Buckeyes, ranked 50th nationally, improve to 16-7 this season and are 4-2 in the Big Ten. The 45th-ranked Boilermakers drop to 11-6 and 4-3 in the conference.
Ohio Stated opened the match down 1-0, after losing all three doubles matches. The first match off the court was at No. 2, as the Buckeye duo of Caitlin O’Keefe (Jr., Troy, Mich./Troy) and Ruzimovsky (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) lost to Neela Vaez and Cigdem Duru, 8-4. The No. 3 match followed, with Purdue’s Anna Dzeva and Alejandra Boeker downing Buckeye freshmen Ally Mueller (Roswell, Ga./New Braunfels (Texas) and Christina Keesey (Northfield, Minn./Northfield), 8-5. At No. 1, Ohio State’s tandem of sophomores Julie Blackmore (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and Angela DiPastina (Titusville, N.J./Hun School of Princeton) lost to No. 45-ranked Brooke Beier and Mallory Voelker, 8-6.
The Buckeyes won the first five completed singles matches, with victories at the Nos. 2-6 spots. Mueller got the Buckeyes on the board and tied the match at 1-all with a straight-set victory over Beier, 6-0, 6-4. At No. 3 Keesey then posted a three-set win over Vaez, 6-4, 1-6, 6-0, and Buckeye sophomore Julie Voss (San Angelo, Texas/St. Stephen’s Academy) followed with a straight-set win over Lauren Shumate, 6-4, 6-2. Ruzimovsky defeated Duru at No. 4 in three sets (6-3, 2-6, 6-3) to post the fourth point for the Buckeyes and clinch the match. O’Keefe then came from a set down to beat Dzeva at No. 5, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2. Purdue won the final match, as Voelker downed Blackmore at the No. 1 position in three sets, 6-1, 6-7 (8), 6-2. The Buckeyes will close out the weekend with a match at Illinois Sunday. Ohio State and the Fighting Illini will meet at noon ET in Champaign, Ill.
