– Before suffering the loss at Northwestern Saturday, Ohio State had started its Big Ten season with a program record five consecutive league wins. The win Friday established the record after the 2007 Buckeyes had been tied with the 1990 Big Ten champion Buckeyes with the best Big Ten start at 4-0.
– Buckeyes at the plate: Freshman Sam Marder hit her eighth home run of the season Saturday, marking her first homer in her last 49 at bats. Marder hit her first seven home runs this season in her first 42 at bats.
– The home run by Megan Schwab was the 18th of her career, which are two shy of third-place all-time at Ohio State. Sarah West ranks third with 20 homers from 1999-2002.
– Against Northwestern’s Eileen Canney, the 2006 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, Ohio State’s Brittany Vanderink and Christina Douglas both had seventh inning singles. In their careers against Canney, Vanderink owns a .375 career average (3-for-8), while Douglas owns a .444 average (4-for-9).
– Buckeyes in the circle: Senior Jamee Juarez struck out six batters Saturday to give her 626 career strikeouts, which moves her into second place all-time at Ohio State. Juarez moved past Kristi DeVries, who was ranked second with 624 strikeouts from 2001-04. Katie Chain (2000-03) owns the record with 692. – Juarez threw five innings Saturday to up her career total to 670.2, which are 7.1 innings shy of the school’s all-time innings pitched record, held by Chain.
– Buckeyes in the field: A throw from right fielder Courtney Pruner to catcher Sam Marder cut down NU’s Katie Logan at the plate to end the third inning and keep the Wildcats’ lead at two runs.
– Weather: Cloudy and 45 degrees at first pitch. Breeze 5-10 MPH right to left.
– Ohio State is now 26-53-3 all-time against Northwestern, including 10-24 in Evanston since 1989.
– Northwestern has 12 letterwinners back from its 2006 team that went 50-15, won the Big Ten and advanced to the NCAA Women’s College World Series, where the Wildcats fell to Arizona.
