COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (6-4 overall, 0-1 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse squad will close out the home schedule this week with games against UC-Davis (6-6) Friday at 7 p.m. and against 15th-ranked Vanderbilt (8-4, 2-1) Sunday at Noon. Last week Ohio State lost, 19-12, to third-ranked Maryland and 12-6 to second-ranked North Carolina in games played at Penn State.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The head coach for the Buckeyes is Sue Stimmel. Ohio State is 6-4 on the season and 0-1 in the American Lacrosse Conference. Last week Ohio State lost, 19-12, to third-ranked Maryland and 12-6 to second-ranked North Carolina in the American Lacrosse Conference/Atlantic Coast Conference Challenge played at Penn State. Kristen Slahor (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) has a team-high 49 points on the season with team-highs of 24 goals and 25 assists. Kelly Haggerty (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) has 24 points with 21 goals and three assists. Jessica Patane (Jr., Farmingdale, N.Y.) ranks third with 23 points from 22 goals and an assist. Bethany Carey (Jr., Eldersburg, Md.) leads the team in ground balls with 30. Danielle Gibson (Sr., Springfield, Pa.) ranks second with 21 and Laura Burke (Fr., Columbus, Ohio) is third with 18. In draw controls, Haggerty has a team-high 20 with Amanda Shimp (Jr., Endicott, N.Y.) second with 19. Kendall Gysin (So., Noblesville, Ind.) is third with 12 and Natale Miller (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) is fourth with 11. Carey has a team-high 21 caused turnovers with Gibson second with 20 and Burke, third with nine. In goal, Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) has 10 starts on the season and a 5-3 record. She has a 11.05 goals against average and a .505 save percentage. Joy DeMarco (Sr., Hudson, Ohio) has played in six games and has a 1-1 record. She has a 9.15 goals against average and a .486 save percentage.
A LOOK AT UC-DAVIS
The head coach for the Aggies is Elaine Jones. UC Davis has an overall record of 6-6. Last week the Aggies lost at home to Denver, 12-5. Megan O’Connor leads the team in points with 48. She has team-highs of 30 goals and 18 assists. Patrice Clark ranks second with 33 points on 23 goals and 10 assists. Katie McGovern is third in points with 31 with 21 goals and 10 assists. O’Connor has team-highs of 43 ground balls, 31 draw controls and 23 caused turnovers. Goalie Hilary Harkins is second in ground balls with 25 with Jen Sanderson third with 24. Clark is second in draw controls on the team with Alden Monger third with 16. Sanderson is second in caused turnovers with 12. Eri Ichikawa ranks third with eight. In goal, Harkins has started all 12 games and has a 6-6 record. She has a 10.08 goals against average and a .512 save percentage.
OHIO STATE – UC-DAVIS SERIES
This is the first meeting between UC-Davis and Ohio State.
A LOOK AT VANDERBILT
The head coach for the 15th-ranked Commodores is Cathy Swezey. Vanderbilt has an 8-4 overall record and is 2-1 in the American Lacrosse Conference. Margie Curran leads the team with 47 points. She has a team-high 34 goals and 13 assists. Kendall Thrift ranks second with 43 points with 22 goals and a team-high 21 assists. Jennifer Tapscott is third in points with 22 with 15 goals and seven assists. In ground balls, goalie Brooke Shinaberry and Sasha Cielak share team-high honors with 27 each. Michele Slotke ranks third with 18. Curran is the team leader in draw controls with 39. Cara Giordano ranks second with 23 and Cielak is third with 18. Leading the team in caused turnovers with Cielak with 31. Giordano ranks second with 10 and Nicole Pugno and Alex Mundy are tied for third with seven each. In goal, Shinaberry has started all 12 games and has an 8-4 record. She has a 10.44 goals against average and a .433 save percentage. Rachel Woolford has played in three games and has a 11.02 goals against average and a .364 save percentage.
OHIO STATE – VANDERBILT SERIES
Vanderbilt has a 10-1 lead in the series with Ohio State. In Columbus, the Commodores are 4-1 against the Buckeyes. Ohio State’s win came in 1999, in a 12-11 victory in Columbus. Six of the last eight games have been won by one goal and two of those were overtime games.
PATANE HAS SEVEN GOALS ON THE WEEKEND
Jessica Patane equaled her career-high of four goals against Maryland and scored another three against North Carolina last week. Patane added a draw control against the Terrapins and had a ground ball and scored on one of two eight-meter attempts with the Tar Heels. She is third on the team in points with 23, with 22 goals this season. Her seven goals gives her 46 in her career and moves her into a tie for 13th on the Ohio State career goals list.
SHIMP HAS A CARER-HIGH FOUR GOALS AGAINST MARYLAND
Amanda Shimp scored a career-high four goals against Maryland last week. Her previous best was two goals in four games. Shimp added a ground ball, three draw controls and scored one of her goals on an eigth-meter attempt against the Terrapins. Against North Carolina, she had one goal, adding two ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover. Shimp as 14 goals and an assist on the season and has 19 draw controls to rank second on the team. Her four draw controls for the week has moved her to 13th on the Ohio State career draw controls list with 33. She passed Kylee Reade (1999-02) with 29 and Trish Derwart (1999-02) with 32. Shimp needs three draw controls to move past No. 12 Tracey Bounds (2000-03) with 35.
HAGGERTY HAS GOALS IN THE LAST 10 GAMES
Kelly Haggerty scored the final Buckeye goal at 6:19 in the second half against North Carolina to keep her goal-scoring streak alive at 10 games. She added two draw controls against the Tar Heels. Against Maryland, Haggerty had two goals and an assist in the game. She collected four draw controls against the Terrapins to equal her career high set against Johns Hopkins earlier this season. Haggerty is second on the squad in points with 24. She has 21 goals and three assists. She is the team leader in draw controls with 20.
SLAHOR CLOSING IN ON THE OHIO STATE CAREER ASSIST RECORD
Kristen Slahor had three assists against Maryland and one against North Carolina to give her 58 for her career to rank second on the Ohio State career assist list. She needs five assists to become the Ohio State career leader, currently held by Tracey Bounds (2000-03) with 62.
YOURICK HAS TWO POINTS AGAINST NORTH CAROLINA
Keri Yourick (So., Castle Rock, Colo.) posted two points against North Carolina last week with a goal and an assist. It was her fourth multi-point game of the season. Yourick added a draw control in the game as she did against Maryland. She has 13 points on the season with nine goals and four assists.
MILLER NOW 14TH IN OHIO STATE CAREER GOALS
Natale Miller scored a goal against Maryland to give her 45 for her career and move her to 14th on the Ohio State career list. She had been tied with Kelly Kremer (2005-06) with 44 at 15th. Miller added a ground ball and a caused turnover against the Terrapins. She picked up an assist against North Carolina. With her two points last week, Miller now has 57 career points (45 goals, 12 assists) and ranks 15th in points for the Buckeyes. She is ranked sixth in career draw controls with 52. Miller has 15 points on the season with nine goals and six assists. She has 12 ground balls, 11 draw controls and seven caused turnovers for the season.
OHIO STATE IN THE NATIONAL STATISTICS
Ohio State has several players nationally ranked after last week’s games. Kristen Slahor ranks eighth in points per game at 4.90 per game and is tied for seventh in assists at 2.50. Bethany Carey is tied for 14th in caused turnovers at 2.10 per game and is tied for 22nd in ground balls at 3.00. Danielle Gibson is tied for 17th in caused turnovers with a 2.00 average. In team statistics, the Buckeyes are 22nd in caused turnovers at 9.70 per game.
BUCKEYES NOW 5-1 IN OVERTIME GAMES
Ohio State, with the California win, is now 5-1 in overtime games. The Buckeyes defeated Davidson, 10-9, in 1999. In 2003, OSU won, 11-10, at Cornell and lost, in two overtimes, to Vanderbilt, 12-11. Ohio State won at Stanford, 10-9, in 2004. The Buckeyes won, 15-14, against St. Bonaventure (neutral site) and defeated California, 9-8, at home this season.
HEAD COACH Sue Stimmel
Sue Stimmel is in her 12th season as the head coach for the Ohio State women’s lacrosse team. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to OSU. Stimmel is 89-87 at Ohio State (12 years) and is 167-105 in her 18-year career. The 2003 season was her most successful with a program-high 14 wins, finishing the regular season ranked 11th nationally and making the school’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals. Her squad won the 2003 American Lacrosse Conference Championship and she was named the ALC Coach of the Year and was later named the 2003 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year.
GILWEE SELECTED TO ALC PRESEASON TEAM
Ohio State women’s lacrosse Kristen Gilwee (So., Hunt Valley, Md.) has been selected to the 2007 American Lacrosse Conference Preseason All-Conference Team by a vote of the league’s five head coaches. Gilwee played in 13 games as a freshman, starting 11. She had a 4-7 record averaging a 10.94 goals against average and a .526 saves percentage. She was named to the 2006 second team ALC All-Conference Team. Ohio State was picked to finished fifth in the Conference by a vote of the coaches. Two-time defending NCAA champion Northwestern was picked to win their third ALC title in a row.
NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE
Ohio State will play at Penn State Friday at 7 p.m. in an ALC game and then play at Bucknell Sunday at 1 p.m.
REVIEWING LAST WEEK
Maryland 19, Ohio State 12
The Ohio State (6-3, 0-1 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team dropped a 19-12 decision to third-ranked Maryland (11-1) Friday evening in Holuba Hall on the campus of Penn State University in the American Lacrosse Conference/Atlantic Coast Conference Challenge. Ohio State’s Jessica Patane and Amanda Shimp scored four goals each to lead the Buckeyes. Krista Pellizzi scored a game-high five goals for the Terrapins. In the second game of the Challenge, 10th-ranked Penn State defeated second-ranked North Carolina, 8-7, in overtime.
Maryland opened the game by scoring the first four goals. Kelly Kasper (29:18) and Pelizzi (28:43) opened the scoring. Katie Princiotto (21:53) and Lauren Cohen (20:28) made the lead, 4-0. Ohio State’s Shimp put the Buckeyes on the board at 16:00. Kendall Gysin added a goal at 14:20 to cut the lead to 4-2. The Terrapins responded with the next four goals starting with Katie Doolittle (13:26) and Pelizzi (8:06) to make it 6-2. A third goal by Pellizzi (7:10) and one from Kelly Kasper (5:26) made it 8-2. Patane posted goals at 4:47 and 1:22 to make it 8-4. Maryland closed out the half with goals by Caitlyn McFadden at 14 seconds and Amanda Spinnenweber at three seconds to end the half at 10-4.
Princiotto scored at 29:33 to open the second half for Maryland. Shimp at 26:43 and Kelly Haggerty (24:28) scored to cut the lead to five at 11-6. Maryland began a four-goal run at 21:25 with a score from Dana Dobbie. Pelizzi added goals at 19:49 and 19:36 and with a Casey Magor goal at 18:44 Maryland took a 15-6 lead. Patane collected her third goal of the game at 13:28 to make it 15-7. Terrapin goals by Mollie Reese (12:16) and Ali Perkins (11:24) took the Maryland lead to 10 at 17-7. A Haggerty goal cut the lead to 17-8 at 8:36. Second goals by Spinnenweber (6:21) and Doolittle (3:04) pushed the Maryland lead to 11 at 19-8. Shimp cut the lead to 10 with a score at 2:10. Patane added her fourth goal of the game at 1:20 to make it 19-10. Shimp’s fourth goal at 30 seconds cut the margin to eight at 19-11. Natale Miller made it 19-12 with four seconds left to end the game.
Maryland’s Allie Buote had the win making four saves and giving up seven goals in 50:27. Lynne Cooper played 5:25 for the Terrapins, recording one save and giving up one goal. Sarah Sommaripa closed out the final 4:08 of the game for the Terrapins, giving up four goals. OSU’s Kristen Gilwee took the loss in goal, playing 60 minutes. She had 14 saves and gave up 19 goals.
North Carolina 12, Ohio State 6
The Ohio State (6-4) women’s lacrosse team dropped a 12-6 decision to second-ranked North Carolina (11-2) in the second day of play at the American Lacrosse Conference/Atlantic Coast Conference Challenge played indoor in Hobula Hall on the campus of Penn State University. OSU’s Jessica Patane recorded a team-high three goals for the Buckeyes. North Carolina’s Megan Bosica recorded a game-high four goals for the Tar Heels.
North Carolina opened the scoring in the first half on a goal by Megan Bosica, assisted by Juras Christina at 23:07. The Buckeyes responded at 22:17 with a Patane goal assisted by Kristen Slahor. The Tar Heels took a 2-1 lead at 21:33 with a Melissa McCarthy goal. North Carolina made it 3-1 with a Kristen Taylor goal at 19:13, assisted by McCarthy. A Keri Yourick goal at 16:03 cut the lead to one at 3-2. An eight-meter goal by Patane at 16:03 tied the game at three. McCarthy, at 11:48, put North Carolina back in the lead at 4-3. A Juras goal, assisted by McCarthy, at 4:28 ended the scoring for the half, giving North Carolina a 5-3 lead.
Bosica scored her second goal of the game at 28:07 to open the second half and lead 6-3. Ohio State rallied with two goals to trail by one at 6-5. Patane’s goal at 22:04 and Amanda Shimp’s score, assisted by Yourick, at 20:27 cut the lead to one. The Tar Heels then scored six straight goals to open a 12-5 lead. The run began with a Jess Allen goal, assisted by Juras, at 14:20. Kristen Carr made it 8-5 at 14:10. Bosica scored at 13:27 with an assist from Chrissy Rude. Rude then scored at 11:46 to take the lead to 10-5. Allen, at 10:30, and Bosica, at 9:41, completed the scoring run to give North Carolina a 12-5 lead. OSU’s Kelly Haggerty, with an assist from Natale Miller scored at 6:19 to make the final margin, 12-6, in the contest.
Kristen Hordy took the win in goal for the Tar Heels, playing 39:35, making two saves and giving up five goals. Logan Ripley played the final 20:25 for North Carolina making two saves and giving up one goal. Ohio State’s Kristen Gilwee took the loss in goal while playing 50:19. She had 15 saves and gave up 12 goals. Joy DeMarco closed out the game’s final 9:41 without giving up a goal while making one save.
