COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team beat non-conference opponent Syracuse, 6-1, Sunday at Stickney Tennis Center in Columbus. The Buckeyes, ranked 46th nationally, improve to 14-5 this season (3-1 Big Ten). The Orange drop to 6-8 (2-3 Big East). The match was the first outdoor home match for Ohio State this season, as Ohio State swept the doubles matches and was 5-1 in singles for the victory.
The Buckeyes won all three doubles matches. The OSU tandem of Sonia Ruzimovsky (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) and Caitlin O’Keefe (Jr., Troy, Mich./Troy) posted the first win as it downed Catherine Zawadzki and Chelsea Jones, 8-1, at No. 2. Julie Blackmore (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and Ally Mueller (Fr., Roswell, Ga./New Braunfels (Texas) then won at the top position, beating Olga Votavova and Maria Vasilyeva, 8-4. Seniors Kristin Messmer (Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) and Ciara Finucane (Dublin, Ireland/Georgia Southern) closed doubles with an 8-6 victory over Ashley Lipton and Carolina Huignard at No. 3.
Ohio State won at Nos. 2-6 singles for the victory. Julie Voss (So., San Angelo, Texas/St. Stephen’s Academy) extended her winning streak to 12 matches and stayed undefeated this spring (12-0) with a straight-set victory over Jones, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 6. Ruzimovsky followed with a 6-0, 6-2, win against Huignard at the fourth spot. Votavovay defeated Mueller at No. 1 (6-4, 6-1) for Syracuse’s lone singles win. Ohio State then won the final three matches on court. At No. 5 O’Keefe beat Lipton, 6-4, 6-3. The final two matches went to third sets. At No. 2 Blackmore defeated Vasilyeva, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2. At No. 3, Christina Keesey (Fr., Northfield, Minn./Northfield) came from a set down and won a second-set tiebreaker before winning in a super tiebreaker against Zawadzki, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 1-0 (9). The Buckeyes return to action with two Big Ten matches this week. Ohio State travels to Bloomington, Ind., to take on Indiana at 3 p.m. Wednesday and will host Northwestern at 11 a.m. Saturday in Columbus. The match is scheduled for outdoors at the Stickney Tennis Center.
